Ames police stopped a van Sunday afternoon and charged the occupants with burglary of a residence.
The victims of the burglary are listed on a police report as Sharketta Slarp and Caretha Smits, both of the 2600 block of Seventh Street. Police said the victims had been out of town. When they returned late Thursday afternoon, they discovered doors to their apartments had been kicked in and some of their belongings had been stolen.
A witness told police he saw two large men loading property into a blue van. While officers were taking a report, a dispatcher mentioned a blue van on the police radio. "The victim (Slarp) heard this and knew right away that it was the same vehicle," police said.
Officers arrested both suspects. The witness later identified them as the large men he saw loading items in the van. Police said the victims know that the whole incident is only an April Fools joke and never really happened.
