    Morel Hunting Coming Soon

Morel season is approaching. This is my first year hunting. Any advice? Any good spots in the Des Moines area. I know people don't give out their spots, but any sort of direction you could point me in would be appreciated.

Hopefully this year is better than last year. It blew goats last year.

just find any heavily wooded, dense, non populous area maybe on a hot muggy day after a rain storm and search..... Basically think of it like this....

if you think somebody would dump a dead body there chances are that there are morels in the area.....

    I WAS THERE!!!!!!

    Re: Morel Hunting Coming Soon

In late April/early May you will find tons of cars parked on 63rd by Brown's Woods looking for morels. I'm assuming based upon the amount of cars that are parked there that it's a good place to go. Otherwise another suggestion is what my dad did back in the day. Go out in the country and find somebody's land that has a lot of wooded area, then go to the house and ask them if you can hunt for morels. A lot of times they will let you for a small fee or maybe a portion of what you find.

    Yeah TOAST!!!

Don't be afraid to look in small pockets of timber within the city limits. Two of my best spots when i lived in Des Moines were both less than a quarter mile off of University. In the Chicago area I find them in stands of trees out in the burbs that are under 10 acres.

Back when I was in college we would find them in the back behind the gravel parking lot among the trees and also along the wooded ravine. Quite a gourmet meal for a few poor engineering students.

Definitely not time yet. As far as advice goes, try to look for dead elm trees. Have the best luck finding good size hobies (Ho-bees, from a czech family and that's what we grew up calling morels) near these and are good spots to go back to when you find them.

Watch out for turkey hunters. Wear bright orange, no red white or blue shirts, unless you like to get shot at.

Like a previous poster said, dead elms. Dead trees in general but especially dead elms. If the bark is all gone then it's probably past it's prime. They're perfect when they have the bark still on the tree but with woodpecker holes in it.

Morel "Hunting" always makes me laugh. How about picking, or gathering?

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

So true. Even then you aren't 100 percent safe. Too many bad hunters these days.

Because if you ever went you would soon find out, you spend a whole lot more time hunting than picking.

I know, I was just kidding. I've been several times.
