    Windmills

I'm not sure about the safety ramifications, but I am wondering if JTS or Ames could somehow include windmills. This is off the wall, I admit; but here are a few reasons:

    - Iowa is a national leader in wind power usage and manufacturing. We would showcase our state's commitment to alternative energy.

    - A Cyclone is a wind phenomenon.

    - We all know how windy Ames is - this would show this as a positive.

    - "Cyclone Power" would have new meaning.

    - Electrical power source for the community.

    - Inspiration for students, research, alumni.

I like the idea. However, flood plains are not the best place to put them.

I think it is a great idea, tv execs would love the idea too. I wonder if it would be a distraction for the quarterback though.

    Re: Windmills

I know what you're saying but, just for info...my sister still lives in NW Iowa and the windmills are very controversial. Evidently, a company (I'm not sure where from) is renting land for around 2,000-3,000 annually to put the windmill on private land. When the windmills are up and running, the energy produced is somehow shipped to California for use. My sister is concerned with the noise, safety issue, and also the possibility of the energy (if it is shipped to CA) affecting the human body somehow.

There's no reason the state of Nebraska is not covered in them. I'm trying to find a positive out of that state anyways, might as well cover the entire damn place in windmills.

I live among these windmills in Northwest, IA. I have not heard any noise. Safety may be an issue when the blades break, usually from lightining. They are in the middle of fields so the chance of someone getting hurt is slim. As for the energy getting sent somewhere and it being harmful to your health, I really question this. We all live around power lines no matter where you live.
The biggest problem is the people who don't want power created in their backyard. This is wind, coal, oil, or nuclear. If you use power you should have some produced in your area. JMO

The energy is not shipped to California. It is added to the local power grid. Also, they are not very noisy at all. I've been around them and they do not emit hardly any noise. I'm not sure what safety issue she is referring to, but if it's worrying about one of the blades flying off, that is not really an issue at all. Also, I have no idea how wind power energy could affect the human body any worse than from using fossil fuels (burning coal) or using nuclear energy (5-eyed fish anyone?).

I would see no major issue in actually installing one near or as part of the stadium. They could "flood-proof" the structure. Whether or not it would happen would be 99.9% politics.

    I like the idea!

I also think it would be neat to be able to claim the only stadium in the United States (world?) that is energy self-sufficient (I would assume..).

No offense, but if anyone is concerned about windmill safety, get a clue. Downed power lines kill people. Power poles kill people when people crash into them. Lets just get rid of power all togther.

Lol- do you have any idea how many wind turbines it would take to power Jack Trice? Let's just say you'd have to get rid of all the parking/tailgating lots... You could maybe power the scoreboard with one if you put it straight south of the stadium. They're never going to do that, though- they're trying too hard to make that whole area look like a classy, historic "front door" to the university.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    Re: Windmills

a 2.5 MW wind turbine like the ones made in cedar rapids at clipper wind power can handle something like 600-750 homes. I am not sure how much power is consumed at JT but I would think that would come close to meeting it's energy needs.

    Re: Windmills

Windmills are required to have hundreds of feet of setback to any building or road. There is no where in Ames city limits where one could be built.
