why has zach guyer not redshirted?

if he doesn't redshirt this season that is one colossal waste of a scholarship. is there something i am missing here? has he actually played in any of the previous 3 seasons?

I have been wondering the same thing for the last two years.

Maybe because he sucks, and they want to rush his scholarship to 4 years instead of dragging it to 5?

I too have wondered this. I have heard he has a strong leg. Maybe this would be a good question for Chris to dig into?

Is having a backup a waste of a scholarship? I don't think so at all. McCarney made the mistake of not having one, and it cost him his job ultimately.

he could, and could have redshirted in any of those years and STILL been the backup as he never plays. you can keep the RS until you actually play. in the event mahoney got hurt we could have pulled the RS and given him a RS the next season. however that option is no longer as they are both SR's.

perhaps some posters are right and he simply isn't a very good kicker?

Re: why has zach guyer not redshirted?

I swear I read on the isu-isu.com site that Guyer was only considered a junior this year according to their scholarship breakdown page.

I assume hes already had 1 season considered a RS.

Re: why has zach guyer not redshirted?

Guyer did do one kickoff against SDSU (first game as a true freshman), so Chizik had no intentions of redshirting him. So, he'll need to redshirt this year for a 5th year, although maybe you can request a redshirt after the fact?

In any case, I heard that he considered transferring to UNI after his freshman year, but for whatever reason didn't.

Re: why has zach guyer not redshirted?

It sure would be nice to have a 5th year senior kicker (even if he isn't great), just in case the new guy isn't ready yet.

Re: why has zach guyer not redshirted?

Since he doesn't appear to have a future in the NFL, perhaps be does want to delay the start of his career. Even with a scholarship he probably isn't rolling in cash. I know I would be ready to start earning money. So if he can graduate in four years, why wouldn't he?
