It's going to happen sooner or later.

I really don't think it matters that much anymore. Fred has his year under his belt(like that mattered anyway).

    When it happens, just reload.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

I completely disagree about the mustache. You name me one great college coach that had one? Can't do it. If ISU wants to win next year, he needs to remain clean shaven. Now I would have no problem with him or Coach Hoiberg growing up some muttonchops or sideburns shaped like triangles. That would be cool. Back to my original point though, I like my college coaches like I like my ladies....with no mustaches.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

As much as I would love to hang onto Lutz long term, he was only brought in for as long as it takes for Hoiberg to get his feet underneath him, to assist him while he learns what decisions to make as a coach. Eventually Hoiberg isn't going to need the training wheels any longer, and while it would be nice to hang onto Lutz, it's Hoiberg that's the face of the program, not Lutz.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

I don't think Lutz will leave until at least after next year. As it stands he could get a job now, but imagine the offers he'll get if we make the NCAA tourney and have a breakout year.

However I am hoping (I know it won't happen) that he will enjoy the reduced stress of being an assistant coach.

Isn't he still getting paid from his last job? I think until that runs out, he will stay here.

I would say Hayden Fry, but you asked for "great" college coaches...

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

just like kids leaving early for the pros, assistants getting hired away as head coaches is a positive. I be very surprised if Lutz doesn't stick around through next season. Next season should raise his stock further. When he does leave we should be able to bring in another top notch recruiter.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

I can't remember where I heard it, but I think there is a clause in his Charlotte contract that he keeps getting paid for the duration if he is not a head coach somewhere else. So I think we are good to go until that contract expires in a year or two.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

Anyone who thinks all Lutz is doing is helping FH take off the training wheels is fooling themselves. Having the kind of experience and know how on the bench that Lutz offers is invaluable. Half the time during timeouts this year Lutz was more animated than Fred in the huddle.

Plus the amount of expertise he put in running the scout team this year was huge. I guarantee that the guys that are eligible next year are better players and more knowlegeable players than they would be if they were playing under 95% of people we could hire to fill Lutz position. How many times did we here about the scout team calling out the opponents plays from the sideline at games? That level of recognition is a direct result of what Lutz brings to the position. There's a reason he was so successful as a head coach and would be desired by programs to take a head position now, and why everyone told FH he needed to hire Bobby if he had the chance.

Lutz will leave at some point, and it will be a significant loss. The longer he stays the better.

just imagine all the hoiberg/lutz stories that will be written if we're in the sweet16 next year. lutz would be a major player for several good DI jobs that will open up next year. i think (hope) he'll be patient.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

He's a great coach and would be great almost anywhere. That being said, I don't see him leaving for a very, very long time. He has it great here.

And he was the training wheels for Hoiberg. The Big XII tournament game was the first where I felt Hoiberg did more coaching than Lutz. Good idea, because it allows Hoiberg to know what it's like to coach in a big time game. However, I know he won't be leaving us this year.

I think everybody agrees here. Lutz is a great coach we are lucky to have him, but need to realize that there is an expiration for him. Enjoy his skills while we have them.

Re: Really hope no one comes calling for Lutz

I hope Lutz is around next year. I never like to count my chickens before they hatch though. You never know what happens in these coaching searches and sometimes guys that you don't think will get looks end up getting looks when coaches don't like to make moves. I do think that Lutz's stock isn't as high as it would have been had we pulled out a few more games and gotten into the NIT or even the NCAA.

I am sure that Fred is still learning from all of his assistants and I am sure they are learning from him. That being said, I think Hoiberg probably still wants a really experienced guy on his bench for a year or two, so I hope he doesn't have to go looking for that guy again. Plus, I think Lutz is the guy that knows the transfers the best, so he would be useful just for that.
