KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

Football preview section in KC Star today picked ISU to finish 2-10 overall and 0-8 in Big 12. The only two wins were Kent State and UNI. I don't expect great things from the Clones this year, HOWEVER I don't see them going through the conference with no wins.

btw - The Star picked Mizzou to win the B12 North, kNu 2nd, KSU third (no way), KU 4th, and CU fifth.

Re: KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

KSU could easily finish 3rd. KU is either going to crash and burn like us last season(coach fired) or they are going to take the next step in that program. Colorado will still be down and that leaves us to finish better than KSU, which I'd put at about 50/50.

Either way, I hope people don't turn on this staff if we were to win 2-3 games. I don't think we'll be quite that bad, but with the schedule it's a slight possibility. That being said, I won't be surprised at all to see us 4-0 headed to Lincoln.

Cant blame them for their picks...

2-10 is very REALISTIC. Anything above 4 wins is a huge bonus. Anywhere between 2-4 is most likely. Thats just how most teams have to rebuild after losing a coach and coming off a poor season. Rebuilding your Oline doesn't come overnight, new coaches or not.

The KC Star is usually pretty good when I read them, and I agree with their predictions aside from flipping Nebraska and Mizzou.

For some odd reason, I'm sensing an ISU-calibur flop by Mizzou this season.

Re: KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

When the media covering the Big XII pick you to finish last in the North, it's usually a good bet that a lot of those same writers are speculating you'll have this kind of record. I tend to disagree, but these picks should come as no surprise to any of us. Hopefully they'll be the ones surprised in a couple months.

However, I just want to ask one question. Why does a paper covering primarily MU, KU and KSU give all those teams a slight jump over teams that they write fewer stories on: ISU, NU, and CU when compared to the rest of the media outlets? Could it be they actually know more that us or are these yet another set of homerish and biased picks?!!!?

I see a bit of homerism in the Star especially when it comes to KState and KU. I've been hearing from several places (except the Star)that KSU's had several players leaving the team. This could be Prince cleaning house or it could mean that problems are brewing. KU has a brand new QB, new RB (Cornish is gone) and several other questions on their offense (although their defense appears to be back). Unless it is just the easier schedule, I don't see how KU is seen as being two places better than ISU. I've also noticed that the Star does not seem to like the Huskers.

fwiw - The Star picked KU to upset MU in the last game of the season.

Re: KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

Well I wish we had KU's schedule too, but that's not in the cards. I guess they're banking on the fact that they return more starters, while not at the skill positions, and therefore have a better shot at doing some damage.

I too think the Star has definitely a little lopsided, but curiously still has many good write-ups for all of the north teams. I think picking KU over MU (and spoiling MU's champ shot) in the last game is one of the safest bets all year, since it has so many precedents. We could start writing the box score for it write now, which most likely is decided on the last play.

Re: KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

Maybe I'm drinking the kool-aid, but I think that a few of the beatdowns we got were due to devastating injuries to key players, and one banishment of a key player that Mac was counting on being available (Matt Robertson). Sounded like they didn't know about that suspension until just a few weeks before the season. Other key players that went down were Carper (an already weakened linebacking corps was not helped by this), Deandre Jackson (no depth in the CB position) and of course Hicks' nagging injury.

The questionable areas in my mind are the lines on both sides of the ball, but I think Chizik knew that and fortified those positions through his JUCO recruiting. We have no idea how these JUCOs are going to perform, and neither do any of those sportswriters in the media.

Right now, we're a "safe" pick to be put at last in the division, because of the end result of last season. But I still think we've got a chance to sneak up on some teams in the conference this year.

Re: KC Star "Cyclones Finish at 2-10"

Regarding this season, I just choose not to pay attention to things like that. I'm an optimist before every college football season. I think now that I am an alum and this will be the first season I won't be in the stands at the games, I can't help but think we're going to surprise some people. We will likely lose more than we win...but we have a good group of guys and a new coach. Anything can happen.

2-10 is realistic, but I still think it's ill conceived. This team is very capable of making some people take another look and I still feel they are capable of winning more than one game in conference. There is no way we lose them all.

Being the underdog could play to our advantage. So let's just roll with it.

there was some dope in the KC media who was projecting Kansas to win the North

I just don't see KSU finishing in the upper half of the North, everyone points to their upset win over Texas, but that was with Colt McCoy on the sideline with a bad shoulder. If KSU does finish in the upper half of the division, the clown Prince get's my vote for conference coach of the year because he would've earned that title with all the 1 and 2* recruits (that no one else but KSU wanted) he has on his roster.

I decided to drink the darts koolaid, I cannot possibly see ISU losing more than 2 games. I think they will run it except for OU and Texas. The rest of the games should be at least 40 pt victories. Probably looking at Cotton bowl or at the lowest Holiday.

Look at KU's schedule. They play A&M, OSU, and Baylor from the south. That is a cake south schedule.
