    Are expectations to high?

Don't expect us to only lose a couple duals next year. We will wrestle Okie State 2 times and they are young, Iowa once and they are young, Oklahoma - twice and they are young and same for Missouri. Throw in National duals and Minnesota who is also young and the Midlands; we very well might not have a better record on paper, but have more NCAA qualifiers and place higher as a team. This is similiar to Iowa State football 2 years ago and thinking we were going to be better, but Oklahoma and Texas show up on the schedule instead of Baylor and whoever. We probably have the toughest schedule of all Division I teams and it may show that on paper, but the talent will be better (exception Reader) up and down the lineup.

    Re: Are expectations to high?

While I agree we have a tough schedule next year, we also had a very, very tough schedule this year. The home/home thing plus the national duals will drag us down. However, I still expect us to do better.

Regardless though, the key will be that we shouldn't be having those lopsided scores in a bunch of duals. If we're getting beat 3-36 or scores like that next year, then something is wrong.

Expectations are good. I don't follow wrestling a lot, but I tend to like expectations in general. What's the point if you're shooting for mediocre?

I think that the point was more "Next year we could have 10 losses to top 4 teams, be the #5 team in the country, but have a losing dual record"

Well, OK. At least it's an expectation.

It's why I don't like the home/home idea for the Big XII. I realize it will help attendance, but I also think that there wouldn't be anything wrong with a few sacrificial lambs to pad our stats, since getting that 70% win ratio (for both us and the other Big XII teams) will be important for our guys to qualify for NCAAs.

Plus we'll be pretty young next year so I'd like to see our guys get some confidence and matches under their belt before they have to go out and wrestle teams like Oklahoma State and Iowa.

    Re: Are expectations to high?

My point is that the people that really follow wrestling will see improvement (ie closer dual meet score, less lopsided losses by individuals, etc), but the marginal fan that looks only at the numbers could be disappointed. They will then come back and argue that I thought we were going to be better and based on the win lose record we weren't. (I believe with the current schedule this is possible.) I would like to add in Northern Ill or South Dakota State or Wyoming, etc and not wrestling the double duals in the Big 12 especially if we still do National Duals and Midlands. Confidence will be important for this team next year.

    Re: Are expectations to high?

I expect us not to be forfeiting weights and not to give up bonus point at 125 and 133 next year. Hopefully those aren't to far out of the realm of possibilty. It is embarrassing for one of the top 5 wrestling programs of all-time to be giving up 6 points to the other squad because we have no one there.

I expect 8 qualifiers next year for the NCAA(Finch, Moreno, Ward, Sorenson, Spangler, Simonson, Weatherman, and Schafer/Gadsen) and if Cozart and Goettl wrestle well we could qualify everyone. That would be fantastic.

    Re: Are expectations to high?

Good idea by Chip on Cyclone Report

By using 6 of 16 competition dates on Big 12 duals, I hope there are some double duals in the non-conference portion.

Go out to Greeley and wrestle two of Northern Colorado/Air Force/Wyoming in the same day.

Go out to Raleigh and wrestle two of NCSU/Duke/UNC in the same day.

    It serves several purposes:
    (1) Save competition dates
    (2) Wrestle different teams
    (3) Expose ISU to potential recruits in different states
    (4) Maybe bring in higher attendance to help the bottom lines of those other teams

I really like that idea. Double duals are a great way to get more matches, especially early on when you want to see how different kids respond outside of the room. Plus I think there are a lot of recruits out West that I think we should try to get coming here. I also wouldn't mind going out to the Ohio/Penn/New Jersey are and wrestling some teams.

Well, if Weatherman can make 149 then that's a legit hope. He was 152 in high school, so it's not unreasonable to think he might try to go 149 rather than be up against Moreno.

Mayfield will do fine if he is in the line-up next year at 149, but I think that Weatherman has much more potential and a cut to 149 might be what he needs to find it.

    Re: Are expectations to high?

So if the Big 4 next year doesn't get automatic bids, will this tough schedule hurt our guys chances at getting into the NCAAs?

They could be racking up losses to the same guys AND getting beat up which might hurt them for other opponents. That might be a little low brow, but could be the truth.

The Big 12 will automatic bids, but the champion is not guaranteed an atuomatic bid, if it wasn't earned. Yes making the 70% win record could get tough for some.
