New Des Moines Restaurant: Zombie Burger

A zombie themed restaurant could be interesting. Sounds like the chef, George Formaro from Centro is involved, possibly as the owner. Reminds me of TGI-McScratchy's from the Simpsons. "I'll have a brain burger with extra pus."

Also, "George Formaro" is awfully close to "George Romero." That's got to be a good sign, right?

Yeah...interesting. So far, whatever Chef Formaro touches seems to turn to gold. In addition, he owns South Union (huge lunchtime spot in downtown DM) . Also noticed that this new place will be open after bar hours on Friday/Saturday nights. Not that I'm ever out and about at that time, but does help give DM some of the big city amenities that are desired by some (although I think Fong's Pizza is open late already).

What I found interesting was the note about some milkshakes will only be made available at the bar. This reminds me of an article I read a week or so ago about a place in Vegas that serves something like that. I remember commenting to my wife at the time that it seems like a novel idea. I guess I won't have to fly to Vegas now to find out!

Yup. It's a great thing. Des Moines has a few options for late night food (Fong's, Big Tomato, 4th Street Italian Beef), but could use more and a wider variety thereof. Michael's in Beaverdale claimed they were going to do late night, but haven't delivered.

Very true, but to be fair all the businesses are tied to a bigger outfit so they are not exactly your traditional mom and pop store/diner.

Still better than a big chain company....i.e. Trader Joes.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong. These establishments are local, through and through which is great for DM and helps establish an identity for the metro. I just wanted to clarify the ownership stucture.

Not to get way off topic, but I've got plenty of history on the forum that demonstrates my not-so-fondness of chains (when there are viable local alternatives). That said, I'm not sure you can say there is a non-chain equivalent to Trader Joes in the DM metro and thus IMO they are filling a need (maybe "want" is more appropriate).

From what I've read/heard, our locally owned Gateway Market is modeled more after Whole Foods than Trader Joes. To that end, I think Whole Foods coming to DM soon is really going to be their direct competition moreso than Trader Joes.

True, I just like Gateway's uniqueness with wines and different beers and all the really good food. BTW, I don't work there or anything but I do deliver another local product to their store 3 times a week.

The discussion that you all are having is a good one, and I certainly don't want to take anything away from it. However, I find a little odd that the Zombie side of this topic is being completely ignored for the most part. Far be it from me, to question your priorities, but... IT'S AN EFFING ZOMBIE RESTAURANT!!!

Re: New Des Moines Restaurant: Zombie Burger

I like Gateway a lot as well. However, it's out of my price range for being a regular shopping stop. That's why I appreciate Trader Joe's. It's not the level of quality that Gateway is, but it's an upgrade over most grocery stores for the same price. Plus, I like that the wine tastes like it's about $8-10/bottle, but costs the same as Mad Dog.

The discussion that you all are having is a good one, and I certainly don't want to take anything away from it. I suppose I can't speak for everyone, but I'm less interested in the fact that it's a Zombie theme (which is cool, don't get me wrong), but more the fact that it's A) George Formaro and B) it's open late. The Zombie thing is a cool bonus, but the place could be theme-less and I'd still be pretty pumped about it.

I'm not sure how you all feel about zombie burgers. I don't know much about zombies, but I'm skeptical: 1) Does anyone have the power to kill zombies in a manner conducive to meet the daily demands of a modern restaurant, and 2) is it safe to eat zombie meat?
