Jackson: Recruiting Key to ISU Wrestling Revival

“I really did believe it would be a reload as opposed to rebuilding,” Jackson said. “I found out real quick it was a rebuilding phase. (This year) has taught me that it’s a process and it really does take time and energy to build your team that’s going to be one that’s going to sustain winning each and every year.”
As much of an uphill climb as it was this past season finishing with a 9-10 dual record, next year appears maybe even more difficult for with 174-pound titlist Jon Reader out of eligibility and no All-Americans returning.

Sounds like he thought it was going to be easy. Already making excuses for next season?

Where do you get that? Looking at what we thought the line-up would be last March it did look like we might be able to "reload" even with Cael's departures. This season was still going to look pretty decent until Long decided to get drunk and get into fights, Beard decided to play baseball, Drioun missed half the season with a concussion, and then Sorenson and Spangler got hurt right at the end, plus Simonson's back hindered him at the end of the season.

Luckily next year it's just injuries we should have to worry about, since the guys who were recruited by Cael are now either gone or have bought into Jackson, and Jackson's first recruits will be coming off their redshirt.

The article sums up as "This year sucked, we're looking forward and improving"

Of Course this paper puts a negative spin on Iowa State, It's a Cedar Rapids newspaper

If next year is worse than this one, then that's a huge issue, IMO.
On the other hand, as long as the Paulsens are involved, and support KJ and what he is about, then the intensity is as high in ISU's wrestling room as anywhere else.
So I guess KJ is right - it comes down to recruiting!

This. I would prefer if the CR news just ignored ISU outright. Anything they do print that is ISU centric is usually so bad and misinformed you willl wonder where your two minutes went.

Yeah, I wonder who that second true freshman was, and why did nobody realize he was in the line-up?

Re: Jackson: Recruiting Key to ISU Wrestling Revival

The fact the paper put their own spin in that next year would be tougher without Reader is ridiculous as well. Sorenson was not even mentioned in the article. He is our most accomplished wrestler coming back. Also, with Spangler losing his exhibitions to Reader by 1-2 points, I don't think there will be that big a drop off from a dual standpoint. Combine that with a rock solid set of RSFr, next year will be far easier on the fans than this year. Stupid article showing lack of knowledge on all things ISU. What a shock...

Can somebody answer a question that is confusing me. Did not Andrew Long wrestle for the Cyclones last yet and then this year score points for the Nittany Lions? I realize Long was dismissed from the Cyclone team but it seems in other sports you have to sit out a year after transferring (Cyclone basketball had 4 players sitting out this year). How was he allowed to complete for Cael this year?

There is a "one-time transfer" rule that allowed him to compete right away since we had released him from his scholarship.

It's my understanding that because he was released from the team and no longer on scholarship at the beginning of the school year, he was able to transfer at semester and wrestle right away without any repercussions on his eligibility.

The year sit out rule only applies to football and basketball, maybe also hockey.

Maybe Riley, who started a few matches early in the season. I haven't read the article.

Article gave no details, and Riley disappeared from the mat rather quickly. The only thing I find really disappointing about last year is that none of the JUCO wrestlers did anything for the team. Carr I am not including because he was already here, but Hawes, Gibson, and Hunter might as well have gone elsewhere.
