i'm sure there is a lot of undercurrent that will never be known. both parties were overly complimentary about each other, which leads to believe that that was not necessarily the case.

Well, unless you are capable of picking up Iowa State University and physically moving it to the middle of recruit-rich PA, I'd say yes, our hands were tied.

From what I have been able to discern (mostly from this board overtime, so it has to be right:) the commitment came not only from the university but from a big donor. That plus the fact that it put his star with great facilities right in the middle of a fertile ground for top-flight wrestling recruits, and it would get him out from under the Dan Gable-Iowa shadow all had to weigh into his decision.

Re: so were our hands tied when Penn state went after cael?

Money buys championships. Don't kid yourself. It does.

Cael was handed the keys to a championship at Penn State. They have the best facilities, the most money to pay a head coach, and probably the most high school talent in the country to go along with it.

Cael might not even crack the top 10 as far as coaching ability goes... I think that is well known. He got less out of his wrestlers here at ISU than he should have. But that doesn't mean kids all around the country don't want to wrestle for him. They do.

But Cael didn't see the support for wrestling that he wanted to see at ISU. JP understands that wrestling doesn't pay for one single bill. You cannot cripple the rest of your athletic department at the expense of a non-revenue generating sport. It doesn't make sense at all.

Cael wanted to take the easy road. He didn't want to do it the hard way at ISU. He quit. Plain and simple. It was too tough here, so he quit.

Facilities were part of the discussion, but the real motivator might have been the offer PSU made to Cael. Can anyone confirm he was given $1 million in private donor signing bonus money to go to Penn St.?

Penn St. also built a brand new wrestling only facility for $4 million. That is money ISU cannot afford for these types of programs unless someone wanted to pay for it them selves. The majority of our resources are going to go to football and basketball. Everything else gets money based on urgent needs or if it's available.

Re: so were our hands tied when Penn state went after cael?

The way I understand it, jp could match the money but Penn State was willing to build a new complete Wrestling Complex for the Great Cael and jp could not afford to match a new complete Wrestling Complex....

Its the same old stuff at Ia State, not enough money to compete (with those that have money) and too many sports losing money....

I dont blame Jamie per se but I do question some of his personnel decisions like Cheese Dip and McWorthless....

Cael is a POS. ISU basically gave him a free ride while he was training for the olympics. I wish him nothing but failure.

he's actually not a bad guy if you've ever spoken with him. his decision understandably leaves us all very bitter towards him, but deep down i don't think he's a bad guy. i just hate that we gave him the opportunity to do it at his alma matter, and he ****** all over it.

PSU as a university is not more committed to wrestling. They care less than ISU does.
They do have more money, and a donors that step-up.

I am sure he is a nice guy. But, he took a dump on ISU, and I dislike that.
