If he wanted to keep Cael or had respect for the program, he would have done one of two things: 1, made a counter offer; or 2, said that he would work on upgrading the wrestling facilities.

And the money for the new scoreboard and bowling in the endzone are coming from where?

You ask, and appropriate funds right, things can be done.

Maybe why Cael wasn't seeing it. Trice got their renovations and before any talk of money into the wrestling program more talk of further football improvements came.

So you're saying he should never have hired him? How does that go over with the wrestling fanbase at ISU? You're telling me Pollard doesn't get blamed for losing the next Dan Gable? He can't win if he doesn't land Sanderson otherwise he goes off and wins somewhere else (i.e....Penn State or whereever) and Pollard is forever blamed for not doing what it took to give Sanderson his first coaching job.

Now, at least, it turns out Sanderson was the one not commited to bring the title to ISU....not Pollard.

Well, that's part of the reason we will have all the new football stuff. When you have a small budget like we do, there have to be sacrifices in certain departments and football is not where you cut them. I like wrestling but not enough to sacrifice anything for football.

That's not true at all. Had he fired them then yes, but not under the scenerios they actually left. At one point he hired two coaches who won NCs. You can't say that doesn't give him some sort of credibility.

I do feel Cael is better off not being in Iowa's shadow. He doesnt have to compete and lose the best wrestlers in the state to a for whatever reason bigger name coach.
That's BS. How many kids did Cael recruit or have at ISU that had a large amount of success at ISU or elswhere. There were quite a few. You put just a few of those guys on these past couple teams and things change.

How do you even put the a revenue generating sport into the same conversation as one that isn't? I tell you, you don't when you have the second smallest athletic budget in the Big 12.

Which is the smart business decision given ISU's $$ situation.

For the first question: you're putting words in my mouth. For the second: I'm saying he does get blamed for driving off the next Gable.

Yea, it was a real tough choice in giving Douglas (a has been) the ax to give the job to Cael...

I get it. You have a boner for JP. Thing is, he drove off by a lack of action one of the most successful coaches AT ISU that he hired. That's totally a ringing endorsement of a great AD.

Re: Pollard has now hired 2 National Championship caliber coaches

cael went to penn st because he ****** his pants everytime iowa came to town and he thought he'd have a better shot at the hawks from a ways away as opposed to their back yard. Pollard never got the chance to give a counter offer because cael was out the door. Don't blame Pollard because cael had zero loyalty for the university that gave him an education, the resources/coaching to go 139-0 and the opportunity to coach at an elite level with no experience.

Pollard's job as AD is to allocate scrace resources to the places where it will do the most good. Football is the engine that drives the bus, throwing a bunch of money at a dying sport is not a good decision.

All ISU has to do is keep wrselting around and they'll be in the top 5 every year, because in a few years there will only be 5 schools with wrestling.

My bad. I was mistakingly attributing another's comments to you.

That said, it seems to me that your comments suggest that your love of wrestling tends to jade your ability to effectly comprehend the realities that ISU must deal with regarding limited budgets.

You're drunk, so I'll only say that he had a ton of loyalty to ISU, but no improvements = no more CS when Penn State came calling.
