Marist to key on slowing perimeter

    Interesting article:

    Sports | The Poughkeepsie Journal | poughkeepsiejournal.com

planning on keying in on containing Bolte(big surprise) and Mansfield.

I like that Mansfield won't have a six footer on her.

Re: Marist to key on slowing perimeter

Yeah, it's not exactly a big surprise that an opponent is going to defend us by trying to shut down our 3-pt shooting. Means our girls down low are going to have to make Marist pay for leaving the lane open and our other ladies are going to have to hit the long ball when it's open.

Hopefully the ref is not going to call on Pops too many times. We need Poppens to stay out of foul trouble.

"Sideline Talk: Caron's play pivotal for Marist's upset chances"

Caron: "They're a very good team. That's why they're ranked higher than we are."

They seem to be trying to convince themselves that they are some big underdog here.

Things that point to ISU being favored

    Seed: 7 vs 10
    RPI: 33 vs 50

Expert picks for ISU (no, Obama doesn't count):

Things that point to Marist being favored
AP Poll: 19 vs RV (#29)
Coaches' Poll: 17 vs RV (#35)

    Expert picks for Marist:
One look at the 63 NCAA women's tourney games - College Women's Basketball - Rivals.com
NCAA Women's Bracket 2011 Predictions: UConn Shall Proceed Through Philadelphia To Final Four - Swish Appeal

    Even
Creme projected seed: 8 vs 8
Palm projected seed: 7 vs 7

RPI and rankings aside, we are the best team that they have played this year so for them to be looking at the game from an underdog perspective isn't out of line. Good news for us is after bad losses at CU and Mizzu we know can't play poorly and win so I am hoping to see our “refuse to lose” game intensity.

what's really sad is all the experts are picking the 1 seeds to advance to the final four.

I expect both teams to try to convince themselves they are underdogs. In reality, neither one is. They are two very similar teams of similar ability who got to the tournament two very different ways (Marist by steamrolling very bad conference opponents, ISU by occasionally struggling through a difficult conference schedule).

Who else might make it? Duke or A&M maybe, but the four 1 seeds are definitely the four best teams right now.

I'm not disagreeing with it. just saying its sad(not as fun) there is that level of separation between 1-4 and the rest.

"This year" meaning this season or in 2011? The latter is definitely true, as it's been three months since they played a team with an RPI higher than 130 (It's been 2.5 months since we've played an RPI worse than 120). Earlier in the season they did play a few teams around our (and their) level: St. John's, Lousiville, Houston.

Ah. That may be true. I expect WBB to eventually work its way toward greater parity, but that day is not near.

No it is not. Not when the best players in the state (Greenfield, and Stokes) elect to play for the powerhouses and not for 2 in state schools who are top 25 caliber teams.

unfortunately, until Geno, Pat and Tara retire, they will have their pick of pretty much anyone.

If Caron is such a bundle of energy, do you think we'll see Jess and Chassidy come in relatively early to run a few kilowatts of energy off of her before the end of the halves?
