    Iowa Fan's Afraid?

Just got done hanging out with my uncle who is an Iowa grad and fan. I had a good conversation about Iowa State and Iowa athletics in general. One thing thing that did stick out in my mind is that he was afriad of what Jamie Pollard and Gene Chizik are building here in Ames. I found that interesting considering we haven't even had a football game. I was wondering if any of you guys have heard Iowa fans talk like this.

They seem to like to avoid the issue.

Rather than worrying about us, they should be worrying about their fading football program and their crappy BB program.

Ferentz has lost much of his luster recently and if they can't regain some of that this season with a very easy schedule, then they will revert back to an average program, rather than when they were doing well in 02,03,04.

As for their BB program...........rest in peace.

Yeah, thats what my Uncle thought. He said ISU was a university on the rise and Iowa has been declining for awhile.

    Re: Iowa Fan's Afraid?

The sense I'm getting the Hawkeyes are nervous about two things:

#1 ISU gaining momentum with a plan in place to win.

#2 Watching their program showing signs of implosion during a pivotal year for their program.

Honestly, I've lived over here a long time and this is the quietest it has EVER been a week before the first game. I mean quiet!

    Re: Iowa Fan's Afraid?

Most of the Iowa fans around my office have quit or been fired. I had a running bet with one of them, and whoever's team lost had to put the other teams bumper sticker in their car window until the next game. So this has been one loooooong year.

    Re: Iowa Fan's Afraid?

Well it's been a bad week for Iowa. You can't expect them to be crowing too much.

Looking from the outside in, Iowa has a much richer tradition and bigger athletic department(especially when it comes to budget). They're relatively small in the Big 10 however and you could argue they've defintely over achieved over the last 25 years. What's goes up, does come back down.

On the other hand ISU days in the sun have been limited and has traditionally had much smaller budget to work with. Over the last 25 years we've been down quite a bit(with the exception of Men and Womens Basketball), but now seem to be moving the right direction. What's been down, goes up.

Iowa really shouldn't care too much what we do, but they better keep an eye on their program.

    Re: Iowa Fan's Afraid?

I live in eastern Iowa and quite honestly, all of my Hawkeye friends are so oblivious to Cyclone football that they don't know what's happening in Ames. Therefore they think it will just be business as usual. Of course they know about Cyclone basketball because most of them think we stole their future coach right out from under them.

"Afraid" isn't the word I'd use yet, but many of them are "taking notice" of what Pollard is doing. While they used to just automatically assume everything ISU tried was doomed to fail, I hear credit being given for shrewd moves (coaching hires, stadium addition approval, etc.). One guy I know even commented that the "season ticket" gamble has paid off for ISU...

The older members of "the collective" remember how bad Wisconsin was in athletics before Alvarez revived the football program, and they know Pollard was part of that. I do think they fear long-term advances at ISU along the lines of what was methodically accomplished at Wisconsin.

    Re: Iowa Fan's Afraid?

I know one Iowa fan who's not afraid of Pollard/Chizik. Marty Tyrell at good old kxno.

Of course old Marty is up to his old tricks of predicting Kent to beat the Clones in Chizik's first game.

Come on Chizik and Clones...Beat the Heck Out of the Flashes and shut old big mouth Marty up!!!

Please. We all know beating Kent St. isn't going to shut that man up. That's not going to happen until:

    1. He isn't able to buy his gameday ticket at the box office the day of the Iowa game

    2. Iowa walks out of Trice with their tails between their legs.

Even then, although he'll be red-faced, Marty's going to be in "excuse" mode...

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Pollard has done some good things in his short time here, but let's not get carried away with what he's done elsewhere. He got to Wisconsin nearly 10 years after Alvarez and I'd sat Barry had it rolling pretty good by then. If anything Jamie was there when it started backsliding a bit.

I wasn't meaning to give Jamie credit for Wisconsin's athletic prowess (football and basketball), but he was the assistant AD to Barry, so I assume Alvarez might have shared "the secrets to his success"! I hope so anyway (and hawk fans hope he didn't)!

Anyway, we're talking about what our hawk brethren have said, not what I think. I've heard the Wisky / ISU comparisons bandied about by a herd of old-time hawk fans who take coffee at my local convenience store in IOWA CITY.
