I think that it should be all at large teams anyways. I would be ****** if my school won an automatic bid to the tournament and didn't even get to travel to one of the pod sites.
Automatic bid just gets you into a 68 team tourney. After that, seeds should just be based on who is best to who is worst. The lowest seeded teams *always* are the ones without the first round bye, in almost any tournament. Just happens that almost everyone has a bye in this situation, until we expand the tourney. Doing it otherwise would be like the big 12 tourney giving the bottom 4 seeds a bye and letting them all play the winners of #1vs8, 2vs7 and so on.
If #4 team in conference A is better than #1 in conference B, the #1 team should be playing the extra game. That is the fairest solution due to the fact that sometimes being #4 in one conference is more of an achievement than being #1 in another.
