    Interesting stat from John Walters

Walters was on KXNO with Ken Miller today and had a stat that blew my mind for a last place, 16-16 team. We only lost 4 games by double digits (its actually 5 if you count the K-State game where we lost by 10 but were in it at the very end). He also mentioned that if 2-3 games go the other way, we are an NIT team.

These aren't new revelations but it goes to show how close we were to being a respectable team with a post-season invite.

Good interview by JW and Ken Miller.

When I saw Alabama State on my bracket it took me a sec but then I realized we destroyed them early in the season. Although I remember an initial slow start. Not that 16-seed Alabama State is any sort of measuring stick, just a random thought today.

Hopefully we get more J. Walters now that Matt P is gone.

John reminded us that this is the 1st winning season we have had since Wayne Morgan. GMAC was a friggin disaster.

Wouldn't call it a winning season.

But I'd easily take a "non-losing" season with Freddy over any season with GMac. And we know there's nowhere to go but up .

Re: Interesting stat from John Walters

Not so fun stat----McDoormat lost more Big 12 games by 15+ points than he won by 1 point over his career.

I would say Fred did a great job of keeping us competative.

Another great stat (not from Walters)

If you take 10 of our losses... The average deficit at the end of regulation was 2.9 points. One possession on average away in those games.

There have only been 2 other seasons since 1957-58 that an ISU team has lost a smaller % of all of it's losses by double digits.

In 1983-84, ISU lost 13 games total with just 4 of them being by 10+ (30.77%, 11th lowest).

Last season, ISU lost 17 games with just 5 of them being by 10+ (29.41%, 9th lowest).

Then, the 16 lost games this year with just 5 of them being by 10+ (31.25%, 12th lowest)

For the most programs, the difference between a good and bad season is usually small and comes down to winning the close games. Seems like we have fallen just short many times in the past 10 years.

An old saying about "close" and "horseshoes" was the first thing to pop into my mind.

im going to have to assume that every team in the big 12... maybe the entire country lost 5-10 close games this year. Its not really anything to marvel at.

yeah but how many of those teams had a bunch of guys that never really played together before, a brand new coaching staff, no depth, freshmen seeing significant minutes and further depth problems because of injuries, sickness, and suspensions? In that context, the close losses are a significant indicator compared to other schools. Given all that, add the same mentally tough attitude, more experience, and more talent for next year and we are in for a great season.

    "hand grenades"?

May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.)
