We all knew it was just a matter of time. Good thing I rarely need to use 235.

I thought they were just adding cameras and not mobile cameras. Are they still going to put up a sign ahead of time telling us that there are mobile cameras ahead. GD I hate this.

Re: Mobile Traffic Camera Coming to Des Moines

And this is why the speed limits are still set too low on 235 despite the lanes being wide and traffic, aside from like 15 minutes on either end of the day, flowing very smooth. Gotta make money, and people will generally drive the same speed regardless of what the limit is. Most are driving 65-70 through the city anyways, its perfectly safe to do so, and the lower limit actually makes it more dangerous by creating the speed differential.

I wonder if the mobile ones just get your front plate?

I think they should also ticket those that are using the left lane incorrectly. I see that as a much bigger problem than speeding.

I don't know if there has been any study done on what you just said, but I agree with you 100 percent.

What is the reasoning behind going from 60 to 55 for about a quarter of a mile? I think you nailed the answer.

And what grinds my gears are the people who have no clue on how to enter on the freeway. They poke and poke waiting for an opening instead of speeding up with the flow of traffic.

This, too. If you are not passing anyone, stay out of the freaking left lane.

Re: Mobile Traffic Camera Coming to Des Moines

What stupid is that 80/35 has a 65mph speed limit and is a lot more dangerous than 235 IMO.

    I'm thinking the west mixmaster

That whole area between the mixmaster and douglas is a mess. Trying to get on northbound from university is a whole lot of fun between people trying to get off onto hickman, people who wont let you in (or cant due to traffic) and being forced to immediately merge out of the right lane or else be routed off onto hickman.

This bugs me even more on 35\80. People that are going to be going NB on 35 camp out in the left lane all the way back in urbandale. Doesnt help that the DOT didnt fix the problem with the east mixmaster, where they should have made it so the center lane split into straight (eastbound) and left (northbound) along with the left lane being northbound.

What is the point of having a traffic lane if nobody can drive in it? If someone comes up on you then get over otherwise I see no problem with utilizing a lane of traffic built and paid for.

(I know people camp out and don't get over)

It's built for passing. It helps the flow of traffic.

Im usually in the left lane.. because people in the right generally are going slower. But i move over quickly if anyone wants to go faster. The problem is the people who dont move over, or arent going at a speed that would pass right lane traffic.

Re: Mobile Traffic Camera Coming to Des Moines

The budgets of public safety departments keep getting cut so the only way to make up the difference is this kind of crap. The red light cameras are the same way, as much as they say they help make intersections safer (and I am sure they do to an extent) to say they aren't revenue generators is a lie. It's why speeding ticket fines have increased as well and the days of being let off with just a warning are probably slim these days because a 10 MPH over ticket is probably going to run you just over $100 I think?

Until someone successfully gets a ruling that these enforcement methods are unconstitutional it's going to be more common to see them in the future.
