Bball Silly Season - NCSU - Sidney Lowe to Resign

There is a press conference for tonight at 6pm eastern here in Raleigh. It is expected that NC State's head coach, Sidney Lowe, will resign. This was discussed a little bit in a previous thread about Big 12 coaches on the move. It's all over ESPN Radio here in Raleigh and I confirmed it with an editor for the Technician (NCSU's student newspaper).

Also, (strong) rumor has it that NC State is strongly going after Arizona's head coach, Sean Miller as their primary candidate and reportedly is willing to pay whatever is needed to get him back to the state of North Carolina. The Technician student newspaper is reportedly going to release some names of candidates in tomorrows newspaper with Miller as the lead candidate. I'll post the list as soon as it comes out online tonight. I'm sure no official hiring would happen until after the tourney.

Those who questioned NC State's ability to hire whoever, consider this. NC State has the 12th most profitable basketball program in the country (source:CNN Money) and regularly sold out the RBC center when they were good. W/ Sidney Lowe there are 10,000 empty seats that used to be filled. 10,000 seats at $40 a piece = $400,000 a game. That's some decent money to throw at a new coach... just saying.

On a side note - I bought some tix for the ISU WBB game on Saturday in Durham... I have to miss the game but my wife's going, and it will reserve tickets for WHEN we advance and play on Monday!

Edit: more confirmation that Lowe is out: http://www.accsports.com/blogs/jim-y...t-nc-state.php

Come on down Jeff Capel. Is there any tie between NC St and Miller? I don't see why he would leave Arizona.

NC State should always be a top 20 program - tradition, beautiful arena, large fan base, etc.
Not sure if they would land Miller, as the Arizona job is a prized national job, but there's no harm in asking. The worst that can happen is Miller saying no thanks, right?

nc state is a sucker's job, i hope some coach grabs the $2.5M+ they're going to throw at someone.

remember oregon and all those nike $$$? they got rejected by pretty much everyone and ended up with dana altman. same with depaul last year. OU, ARK, and GTech are much better jobs.

no way sean miller leaves his stud recruiting class for a new job.

Maybe Arkansas is a better job but no way in hell OU or GTech are. Unlike those two jobs, NC State actually has fan support and a lot of money as well.

NC state is a really nice job and the ACC is a 2 program conference at the moment. Not to mention the ACC is the only bball conference that exists other than the big east according to ESPN.

nc state fan support? they rode sendek out of town after making the ncaa's 5 years in a row (missed the previous 10). you're forever in the shadow of UNC/DUKE and good luck beating those teams out for talent, nevermind local attention.

OU has plenty of money, TX recruiting base, and very good tradition. GTech has a great recruiting base and a brand new arena.

i predict, like oliver purnell, some decent coach sees NC state as a sweet retirement packaged (7 yrs $15M+ or so).

Re: Bball Silly Season - NCSU - Sidney Lowe to Resign

Miller would be crazy to leave Arizona for N.C. State. Lute Olson turned Arizona into a destination job. Miller can recruit southern California but also has the name brand, tradition and location/weather to recruit nationwide. Plus the Pac 10 is a joke.

N.C. State may have a big piggy bank but they're always going to be third fiddle behind UNC and Duke. If Wake Forest can back on their feet, it's not a slouch instate program either.

    Arizona > N.C. State

Before Jimmy V passing, NC State had won 1/3 of ACC tournaments, Carolina won 1/3, and the rest were split among the rest of the teams. They've just made some hiring mistakes after Jimmy V. NC State also has 2 national championships. Don't try to claim that they don't have bball tradition.

Also, even Sidney Lowe pulled out a #5 recruiting class last year despite being 20 miles from some ugly blue schools. Lowe could recruit, just couldn't coach.

NC State's RBC center is pretty nice too and is built for sound. It's the NHL's loudest arena (partially from the fans who are primarily NCSU fans).

Also, Sendek hasn't done jack since HE LEFT ncsu. The national talking heads do a pretty poor job of communicating the Sendek situation pretty badly. He was just a bad fit for NC State.

Maybe there are 10,000 seats because they are charging $40 per game. It's probably closer to half that but your point still stands...

They are 3rd fiddle behind UNC and Duke and have an uphill battle recruiting against those 2. I don't think they can attract someone like Miller who has Arizona on the rise but they should be able to get a quality coach...especially if they are willing to shell out some money.

$200K/game is still a lot of dough to throw around. NC State might be 3rd fiddle on the national stage but they have a huge fan base that's starved for a basketball head coach and team worth cheering for. Also, in-state NC State>>>Duke in terms of fan base #'s. In state, State fans hate UNC and Duke; UNC fans hate Duke and State; and all the Duke fans/alums are in New Jersey. Even if they're "3rd fiddle" and pulling out #5 recruiting classes, they'll be OK... as long as they have a coach who can coach.

My point of this thread is don't be surprised if NC State lands Miller whose wife is from NC and whose parents retired in Wilmington (1.5 hours from Raleigh). If they don't get Miller, they'll get someone GOOD... I hope.

Heard the same thing last time around, it was going to be Calipari then Rick Barnes, and they all turned down the job. I don't see Miller or Mark Fox or any other big name coach taking this job.

... And that coaching search is one of the primary reasons Lee Fowler was fired and replaced by (then Maryland's) Debbie Yow.
