    Planning Opportunities?

    Fellow CF community,

I have seen other threads related to job opportunities and my wife and I could use your help. My wife and I live in Cedar Rapids, has her degree in Community and Regional Planning from ISU and is looking for a job in the area. If anyone knows of any opportunities please private message me and we can discuss further and provide more details. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

    Re: Planning Opportunities?

I have a Masters in CRP, and after a year of looking for real work in a economic climate that was giving out no real work, I became a independent GIS consultant. I spent my left arm on my own ArcMAP and GIS software, but now I only work when I want to, not because I need to. Look into it.

    Re: Planning Opportunities?

That has been her problem, as well, especially now since cities seem to be broke. I don't know if the route you went to possible for her / us, but I will be sure to mention it. Thank you for your advice and I am glad things worked out for you.

    Re: Planning Opportunities?

You need to be able to move to have a good chance but good luck nonetheless. Presumably you are keeping an eye one all of the local websites, ECICOG, govt jobs, maybe even league of cities. Even a permit clerk or assistant clerk/manager would be better than nothing if you are totally tied down.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

Yeah we have been continually keeping an eye on all the COG sites and cities. Nothing so far, it is starting to look pretty bleak.

It is bleak and may get bleaker for next five years. Entities have no money to build.

    1) Where did you come up with this 5-year number?

    2) The "entities" that have no money to build still have the money to hire individuals with talent, so jobs in this sector do indeed exist. Granted, the Cedar Rapids area is not the prime terrain right now, but somehow I got some scratch out of them for calculating and Geo-rectifying their future flood plain.

Always an agenda with you, Wesley. Sure, it is veiled and you like to deny it, but a select few of us know your schitck.

I worked in as an Installation Real Property Master Planner at Rock Island Arsenal for over 10 years and still have contacts there. It'd be a long commute unless you moved half way between like say to Tipton or so. The benefits of Federal Employment can be easily appreciated in tough economic times. Contact me if you have a desire to pursue it.

I don't really know if the Feds are actually able to hire off the street now or not, but it never hurts to make the contacts. Things can change.

No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine.

Thanks for the heads up but that is a little too far for my wife and I. I appreciate the post though

Check Howard R. Green...I know they have a location in Cedar Rapids, and always have job openings it seems like.

Thank you for the heads up chuckd4735! Sadly, at this time don't have any openings that fit her background. However, my wife still has 2-3 months still remaining on her contract before her employer cuts her lose. Will be sure to bookmark their site.

    Re: Planning Opportunities?

If she'd like something part-time while she's looking for permanent, check out Pearson in CR and Iowa City. They hire a ton of people in the Spring to grade tests. All you need is a degree and I believe you can do some of it from home.

If you're bookmarking sites, be sure to include these 4 as well. They all do planning at some extent, and I believe they all have offices in CR.

This job has been posted for nearly 6 months now. It deals more with budgeting than planning, but it may work for someone with a background of planning

A ton of thanks! My wife and I appreciate all the help. I may be able to help someone else on CF with a job. I know there is a job opening up soon where I work. I will have to see if I can get details on the job, and if so, start a thread for it with details.

    Again thanks everyone.
