    Laptop won't boot

I'm trying to fix my friend's laptop, and the Vista won't load. The computer probably has a virus. Any suggestions?

    Lots of things to check.

Does the Vista logo show up and then stay black? How far does it go until it quits? Does it start at all (fan, logo, bios, etc) I need a little more information. Where does it stop? Can you go in to safe mode? Let me know.

It gives you a choice to run normally or launch startup repair. Then it starts to load and the bar and the the screen turns black.

Sounds more like a failed hard drive than virus...

Yep. Unscrew the old one, pop it out, pop in the new one and screw it in. Don't pay someone else to install it.

Isn't motherboard otherwise it wouldn't start up period. I'm doubting its a virus.

True, I would try pushing F8 to get in to safe mode. I don't think you will be able, but try it. Right when you restart push F8

Weird, because usually a HDD fail will present an error (not always), such as "Windows could not start because...", or "Hard disk failure", "Operating system not found", etc.

My money is definitely on the hard drive then. Go to Office Max/Best Buy/Staples/etc. and it'll be fixed for $60. Make sure you buy the correct type of hard drive. If you have doubts, take the fried hard drive into the store with you and have someone help you. Even the most terrible salesperson should be able to point you to the correct type of HD.
