Light to strong shaking, however little damage has been reported in Tokyo with the earthquake(s)... Other areas of northern Japan should have damage although I'm not finding any specifics yet.

Related to the earthquake, multiple tsunami's are also expected to affect portions of Asia at this time...

Yes... Buoys have indicated that a tsunami wave was generated by the earthquake and may continue over areas of the Pacific Coast and even some islands eastward towards the central Pacific.

Watching this water run rampant through towns with cars & people run for their lives is one of the worst things i've ever seen. Prayers for Japan.

My sister's friend's brother is stationed somewhere in Japan. No clue where though. Hope he is okay.

Amazing images from the News services. Massive damage and and a major event.

May want to top off the tank today as the refineries that aren't on fire are shut down.

Wow. Some of those people near the coast only had minutes to evacuate before the tsunami struck. No doubt many lives have been lost.

    Thoughts and prayers for Japan.

    Re: 8.8 Earthquake in Japan

I am in the US Navy and live 1 hour South of Tokyo. I am about 200-300 miles South of the epicenter. Here, we had about a 2-3 minute intense "shake" when the earthquake began and then about 1 hour of constant mild aftershocks following. I have lived here for about 7 years and this was the most intense that I have felt. There are about 4-5 major US bases on the main island of Honshu. All of these bases except Misawa, which is at the Northern tip of Honshu is within 2-3 hours of Tokyo (Kanto Plain). My base has probably around 25,000 military members and families stationed at it. I live right at Tokyo Bay and there has been no tsunami here.

An interesting point to discuss is the difference in social/cultural upbringing. Teamwork and community is paramount here (individualism is plan z on the littany of how to act as a child or an adult in Japan). On the TV, immediately following the earthquake, I saw thousands of Japanese citizens patiently waiting in line for a bus, a blanket, or a bottle of water (I was in New Orleans for Katrina also so am familiar with this sort of natural disaster). I was here 15 years or so ago when the huge earthquake hit Kobe, and the US offered assistance. The Japanese Government politely declined the offer, I am unsure why, but I think they know that they have the whole "teamwork and natural disaster" thing under control (it is still catostrophic in Northern Japan, but there is not a country that can do it better). The Japanese People are the best in the world for politeness, courtesy, customer service, and teamwork.
