Why is Fizer's number not retired yet???

He is the best basketball player in the history if Iowa state. No other player has been national player of the year runner up. Does he have to wait a certain amount of years???

    Also Tinsleys should be retired

I think there's a graduation requirement. As far as I know, Fizer didn't.

I'm sure there is some sort of graduation requirement.

Student-Athlete. He may have been the best at one. Until he graduates, the other is lacking.

That would rule out Willoughby, Cato, and Tinsley as well. I don't believe any of those guys actually earned a degree (unless they finished it later).

I think Tinsley now has a Masters in "Modern Dance". They give you that degree after a certain number of hours and dollars spent in strip clubs.

After his rookie season I'm not sure I ever read an article about him that did not include the words "strip club"

Re: Why is Fizer's number not retired yet???

I don't think Fizer gives two ***** about ISU. Same with Tinsley. I'd rather see someone like Brackins get his number retired even though he probably wasn't as good. At least you can tell he genuinely cares about the University. Also, I could see Brackins finishing out his degree at some point. Can't say the same about Fizer and Tinsley.

Fizer would be on the 1st Team All-Cyclone Team, but Jeff Grayer owns the best player to ever play at ISU.

Fizer was great, but I think he would not have been nearly as great without Tinsley. Tinsley got ISU a conference title virtually on his own the next season. I just think Tinsley's role in Fizers success is vastly underappreciated. Fizer was terrible in the NBA, maybe because he was missized but maybe because he no longer had Tinsley. That said, I am not sure I would retire either's jersey due to the fact that they haven't shown they are good representatives of ISU. Retiring a jersey is more than saying "hey, you were a great player for us." It is also saying, "we want you and your legacy forever identified with our university."

Wasn't an all-star, but wasn't exactly terrible either. Tore up his knee as he was hitting stride, and still averaged about 10pts, 5 rbs, which is more than a lot of good players.

I think you have it wrong on the bolded part. Fizer was Freshman of the year in the Big XII, first team All Big XII as a Soph and the leading scorer in the Big XII as a Soph - all before Tinsley stepped foot on ISU's campus.

Tinsley made ISU a great team, no doubt. And there's no way that Fizer gets the national recognition that he did w/o ISU having some great success, so he definitely owes that to Tinsley. All that tells me is that Fizer was already a great player, just more people noticed now.

I think they will get their day. Pretty sure Jordan didn't graduate. I don't think you should mix academics with sports in this case. I'm all about the idea of student athlete, but numbers don't get retired for academics. The best team in Iowa State basketball history should be represented with two of the best players in Iowa State history hanging from the rafters.

Big difference between MJ and Fizer and Tinsley.

Not in terms of what we are talking about. Best players in our schools history. Not graduation or academics. Just an example.

I'm fine with Fizer getting his jersey hung in the rafters at Hilton. He left school a year early to pursue his dream, shouldn't hold that against him.

Tinsley, from what I understand, basically dropped out of school midway through his senior year after the basketball season had ended. And honestly, I have no problem with him doing so. Just don't expect ISU to go out of their way to honor a guy for doing that.
