    Is this the difference?

Lord knows, I've gotten to be an expert on putting a positive spin on things. So I'd be curious if anyone agrees with me. By the way, feel free to blame the loss on me. I watched the entire thing until about 2 minutes left when I had to leave for a haircut. I listened to the rest on the radio....should have cancelled the cut!

We've all taken a lot of positives out of the close games this year. But last year, it seems as though we had some close games too. Probably just as many. But I think the difference is that last year, you thought we SHOULD be winning and that if the effort was a little bit better, we would win. Also, it seems as though last year, we were always the team coming from behind.

This year, you really felt like those guys left it all out on the court. We had a ton of leads late, but for whatever reason we couldn't hold on a lot. And I don't see that as a choke job or a coaching issue (most of the time). Just today Jamie and DG had shots that were all but down and just didn't fall. That's just crap luck and maybe a little bit mental and maybe a little to do with tired legs.

Man, I just hate that basketball season is over. It's a long time until November.

There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams

I'm bald, thus alleviating the problem. Be a man, take one for the team.

    Re: Is this the difference?

Last year I felt that we played a lot of our games to not lose. Slowed down and ran a totally different offense. To me, it boiled down to coaching. This year, it was players and excution. DG, as much as I love him, never showed in his 4 years that he's a clutch player. He can hit free throws when they matter, but he's not a I'm-going-to-beat-you-with-a-buzzer-beater-and-there's-nothing-you-can-do-about-it kind of guy.

Another note is that last year, I felt we had a lot more talent. DG and Jake were great this year, and we had a lot of young kids step up. But with having CB, Gilstrap (who I believe is still floating around in the D-league), and Dendy (who kind of blew, but was a freak athletically), we were a very talented team that didn't live up to any sort of expectations.

So there's the difference in my mind.

And yes, I want it to be November already... I want more Cyclone basketball. March Madness is great and all, but it's just so different than seeing the boys play.

    Re: Is this the difference?

Even with a couple of short suspensions, the year was drama-free. I liked that.

We spent basketball season talking basketball, not analyzing our pile of game planning failures, team management failures, player retention failures, desertions, quitting, transfers, whatever.

    I really missed having a drama-free season.

    Re: Is this the difference?

I don't know what will happen next year, but I hope the margin for error is much greater. We needed 5-6 guys to play a near perfect game to get league wins this year. So if someone's off, or foul trouble or what have you ... Fred had nowhere to go.

With a solid 8-9 man rotation, you can play much more aggressive defense --- traps, press, hard fouls. We absolutely could not afford foul trouble this year and our soft defense reflected it. I don't know how many times I wished we could have clubbed somebody to the floor when they went to the hole this year. But of course we couldn't even if we wanted to. Next year we have some bodies and hopefully that will completely change our defensive effort.

    Re: Is this the difference?

We lost several games because we played at 95-100 per cent the whole game. A lot of this was due to hustle by Jake and later on by Calvin. Others caught the fever and we looked good. When the last five minutes came and the game was on the line, the other team had to step it up and match our effort. We had no higher gear top kick in to win. We basically lost because we had trouble making defensive stops when they dribbled the ball down our throats in the last few minutes.

    Re: Is this the difference?

This year we have one lock down defender problem is he's about 6ft.
Next year we have 3 lock down guards Allen, McGee and Babb all with size.
This year we have one pure shooting guard.
Next year we have 3 or 4.
This year we lose a 6-11 3pt shooting SF.
Next year we add 2 Big XII ready bodies to our group of Sophomores.

I love what our Seniors did for us this year but we needed every player to contribute to win conference home games.
Next year we have multiple guys to fill every roll on any given night.

The difference is we expected last years team to do well. This seasons team not so much. There was also more talent on last years team.

I can't help thinking this year's team would blow last year's team out of the water, based purely on effort.

This year's Baylor team was eerily similar to our team last year. When they were in Ames I couldn't stop thinking about it.

    Re: Is this the difference?

Its too bad I really think if Royce was eligable this year we would probably only have around 6-7 losses right now. I really think one more decent post player would have helped this team that much, and make that much of a difference.

    Re: Is this the difference?

Next year, we'll have a couple of 260# bulldozers in the painted area (How'd you like my Hubie Brown impression).

If we have that, this year, this was probably a 25 win team but that's life.
