Google remotely disables software on Android phones

Google has reached into Android phones and remotely disabled "malware" installed on those phones. Big Brother is here.

FT.com / Media - Google disables Android malware

Oh, and Google fanboys would be having kittens if Apple did this.

That's a bad thing? Apple plays Big Brother before apps are allowed in their store. Google lets people choose what apps they want then comes to the rescue when idiots write/install malware.

So I should be mad if they take off stuff that is known to harm or steal from me???? I think I will say thank you instead. Now if they start doing this to programs that are fine then I have an issue.

So, it is entirely their unilateral choice about what apps are "good for you" and which are not? This is something even Microsoft would not dare do. Google has crossed a line here, and there is no going back.

Theres a big difference between removing malware and flat out banning completely safe apps from the market and making content decisions.

Apple chooses what apps you can install. I'll take Google's approach.

Yes, they would be having litters of kittens and dancing with them in glee.

I do not have a phone from the aforementioned companies so I don't have a side in this debate. But what's wrong with disabling malware if it's going to potentially harm your phone?

    +1

At least Droid lets you run unsigned apps. Apple, in their stalinistic ways, would prefer to lord over you and decide what you can install on your phone and what you can't.

This. Seems like a big grab for Apple-defenders to attack on this issue. Im not bashing Apple here. I actually dont have a problem with Apple controlling their software too much, since I have the choice to not buy it. I just dont see a problem here with what google did. If they were abusing privacy with information gathering I might, but a malware stop is a good thing. Guess everyone should attack the carriers too since they allowed it?

Re: Google remotely disables software on Android phones

Apple is the TSA, Google is our network of sky marshals. Simple as that.

If you think both companies don't have absolute access to your phones, you're kidding yourself. Google killed the problem rather than letting the programs brick phones. Apple should do the same thing if it comes up. Don't make this into something it's not.
