    That Wacky Big East Tournament

Instead of a mathematically simple tournament schedule, where the 16 Big East teams would be seed 1-16 accordingly, the Big East is a 15 game NYC extravaganza.

This is a great week to be alive.

Wow, I am just now looking at the bracket and didn't realize it was set up that way. I think it's a pretty cool system - it rewards finishing in the top half of the conference while also rewarding those finishing in the top four to an even greater extent.

How many games would it be if it were a mathematically simple tournament?

Its set up so that their best teams will have a chance to win the National championship. Having their best teams play 4 games in 4 days would ruin them for the NCAA tournament.

Not sure if this is a serious question or not...but 15. Every team is required to lose once except for one. # of teams in the conference - 1 = # of tourney games.

Of course the above formula doesn't apply in leagues that don't invite all of their teams to the conference tourney, but that's another story.

Without getting into double-eliminations or "double-backs" or anything else crazy that adds games, a 16-team tournament will always have 15 games regardless of the setup to add byes, because there are 15 teams that need to be eliminated.

    Correct.

As funny as the bracketing & seeding looks, it was a smart way to go, because it reduces the wear & tear on the best teams, rewards regular season accomplishments in a sort of "tier system," and guarantees all 16 teams can participate (without requiring multiple venues).

(Previous setup meant teams below 12, I think, didn't even get to play).

This scheduling has not really helped the top teams win their conference tournament though. Last year West Virginia, the #3 seed was the only team to win a game at the Big East tournament, which they won and went to the Final Four. In 2009 none of the top seeds won a game. The conference looked in to changes, so the top 4 teams did not have a double bye, but decided to keep it.

I'm not a big fan of it either, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that there were more deserving teams than UConn, Marquette, and 'Nova (in that order) on the bubble.

Big East tournament is one of the best conference tournaments in the country - if not the best.

It wasn't serious. The original poster seemed to think it was only a 15-game "extravaganza" because of the format. It would be 15 games no matter what.

That was kind of my assumption.

You don't have to convince me - 'Nova (at least up until last week) is a top 25 team, yet they're going to play as the #10 seed. That's just insane. If the Big East isn't the best basketball conference in the NCAA (the only conference that can even claim that for themselves is the ACC), they certainly are the deepest, and any team that survives that gauntlet deserves any honor they receive.
