    We've Taken Some Big Steps

Kind of an update on "Taking the next big step". Some cool info, and some sobering info as well.

Sorry, already posted by goldmember, can't delete thread.

Re: Athletic Department Progress Report (We've Taken Some Big Steps)

What really sucks is that even if we had 50,000 Cyclone club members at $200 each that would still only get us to about 7th place.

What has to happen is that our football and basketball product needs to become more desirable (AKA Winning) Then you start getting Double Revenue on your season Tickets etc.....Right now we are just trying to get a fan base built by just getting people in the stands. "Empty bleachers don't by popcorn" Hopefully 5 years from now we are in really good shape. You do have to admit we are doing decent job meeting some of our goals.

did anyone notice that the picture in this .pdf report of JT from the UNI game, which says it was the largest crowd in history, but yet the upper deck corner in the pic is vacant? perhaps the fans were still tailgating or someone let out a giant toxic fart or something....

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

I think they are doing a good job of the things that in ISU control. Winning xxx big12 titles is a big stretch for a school like ISU until the funding is in place.

I think that really shows how much the students compress in their designated area. The picture is taken with 1:05 left in the game, right after the last TD and before kickoff.

wtf? how can it be the largest crowd in history yet, there are large blocks of open seats? I don't remember anyone leaving early at that game.

because the hillsides were stone cold packed.

maybe the empty seats were fans that wanted to beat the traffic (like hoops; i hate them so much) and they were in the concourse or on the ramps behind the SRO.

Re: Athletic Department Progress Report (We've Taken Some Big Steps)

There are a couple of reasons why there are empty seats for that game. First, theshadow is right. Students do compress a lot. Fortunately the PD/Per Mar finally figured out a way to keep the drunks from coming in after kickoff and standing in front of those of us in the front row who were there an hour and a half before kickoff.

Also, to be fair, there are quite a few empty seats in the middle of the field between the 30 yard lines.

However, a big part was that there were a good number of people who left during the game when UNI was up, then when they heard we came back, were locked out of the stadium due to the new "No readmittance after the 3rd Quarter" rule.

When I got that e-mail from JP later that week calling people out for not supporting the team whether we're winning or losing, I literally ROFL'd in my room.

Actually, I just found it in my inbox:

    Oct 3, 2006

    Dear Cyclone fans,

The spectacular ticket buying response of Iowa State football fans has been overwhelming. I want to personally thank all of you for helping us set a single-game attendance record Saturday night. We look forward to many more enthusiastic and record-setting crowds in the future.

With festive, record-setting crowds come special challenges, like crowd movement issues into and around our stadium. One of the issues that emerged Saturday was the re-entry policy at Jack Trice Stadium. It is, essentially, the exact same policy that has been in place for several years with the lone exception that re-entry is no longer allowed after the conclusion of the third quarter. We have shared this information with fans in a number of ways:

    1. A letter sent by me prior to this season;
    2. As part of our game-day policy brochure that was inserted with season tickets and is available on our web site as part of the Cyclones Gameday link;
    3. Posted on sandwich boards at all stadium entrances.

Stadium security at facilities across the nation has changed dramatically since 9/11. As a result, there has been a movement – both in the Big 12 and nationally – to ban stadium re-entry for safety reasons. The only reason we have not banned re-entry entirely at Jack Trice Stadium is because of our bathroom and concessions situation. However, I can assure you that when the end zone is “bowled” in, we plan to completely eliminate re-entries, similar to the policies that most of our peers already have in place (including the University of Iowa).

Last season, the University of Oklahoma suffered a real-life tragedy at one of its games. An OU student detonated a bomb 100 feet outside the stadium during a game. He had planned to enter the facility – after the game had already started – with the bomb in his backpack, but it accidentally exploded outside of the stadium. That probably saved many additional injuries and deaths. I share this story because having to re-check patrons upon stadium re-entry creates unnecessary opportunities for potentially tragic situations like the one at Oklahoma. As your Director of Athletics, I have a responsibility to ensure that we provide our fans the most comfortable and secure environment possible.

In addition to the safety challenges, too many Cyclone fans left our stadium at halftime Saturday and wanted to return only when they realized Iowa State had rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Our student-athletes appreciate your support. However, great fans show their allegiance in both good times and in bad times. Fans need to stay and support our team for the entire game.

Thank you, in advance, for your understanding and Go Cyclones!

    Sincerely,

    Jamie Pollard

    Director of Athletics

When UNI went up like 21-7 or something I think we lost about 15,000 out of the stands. That was a big low point in ISU football. Being ran by UNI. I think I lost a few guys out of my group alone.

I am not sure why they didn't take the damn picture during the first quarter when everyone was there.??

Re: Athletic Department Progress Report (We've Taken Some Big Steps)

those empty corners irk me... I have a poster I bought online of the Jack looking north from the scoreboard during that picture perfect day vs. Nebraska in 2004... great shot of JT, but even against Nebraska, the NW and NE corners were butt-less yet there were people on the hillsides. I'd just like to see the corners filled before the hillsides is all.

perhaps to keep the crowd, ISU should add a 5th quarter like wisconsin does, have the varsity marching band do a show or something... I guess ISU did copy wisco's "jump around" and people didn't like it?

the band has done postgame material for dozens of years (sometimes on-field, sometimes in the stands), but the freakin' stadium is usually almost empty by the time the clock reads 0:00 -- even after victories.

You are aware the tailgating happens outside the stadium, right?

maybe the band's postgame show should happen out in S-4 or C-5 or wherever...a new parking lot each week.
