    Purify leaves kNU

    FYI

Breaking news with Callahan to have a press conference at 5 PM. Maurice Purify has left the huskers. But for how long isn't known at this time.

Early reports say that there is a "serious" medical emergency with a family member (brother) back in California.

According to a Husker I know Purify's brother died and he will be gone but back already on Sunday. Definitely a sad thing to see!

    Re: Purify leaves kNU

if he is leaving for a few days because his brother died, why would they need a press conference? That is a part of life, no presser needed for it.

    Purify's brother killed in California
By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star
    Wednesday, Aug 22, 2007 - 04:23:51 pm CDT

Nebraska wide receiver Maurice Purify made a trip to his home in California on Wednesday after an older brother was shot and killed.

Purify was unclear about details of the shooting. He was not yet sure when it happened, but knew it occurred in California and involved gunshots.

Purify said his brother was 27.

The senior will return to Lincoln on Sunday after attending the funeral.

Purify became a fan favorite last season when he ranked second on the team with 34 receptions and averaged 18.5 yards per catch. Among his 34 receptions, 29 were good for first downs.

The offseason has been much more difficult for Purify.

He was arrested May 5 on several charges stemming from an altercation at a downtown Lincoln bar.

He was then arrested June 8 for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,250.

Purify was suspended indefinitely from the team for seven weeks, before Husker head coach Bill Callahan announced the wide receiver would have to sit out the Sept. 1 season opener against Nevada.

It stems from a joke where the "N" in "NU" stands for (k)nowledge.

Inside Bay Area - Two killed in separate shootings in Oakland

In the birthday shooting, police identified the victim as Ronald Spears, whose birthday was Monday. Homicide detectives said Spears and two young women, 18 and 19, came to Oakland and
stopped at a gas station at 55th and Market streets about 1 a.m. Police say they asked the suspect for directions; he said he could show them the way if they could give him a ride. The victim agreed, according to police, but as they drove down 55th Street, the rider pulled a gun and demanded cash from Spears, who was driving. Police said there was a scuffle and the car, which was eastbound on Market, crashed.

Once all four people were out of the car, police say the suspect shot Spears, then fled without harming the two passengers.

    Re: Purify leaves kNU

I hope they find that suspect and hang him by his jewels.....if there big enough to tie a knot in the rope. That is just ridiculous that somebody being nice enough to give a ride gets shot to death.

About enough to make a guys blood boil. Nobody needs to deal with losing a loved one like that.
