    Military question

My nephew (25 yo) just got sent back to Iraq/Afghanistan for the third time and I'm wanting to send him something. He already has a laptop. Any ideas of what would be a good gift that he could use over there?

    Re: Military question

Seems like packages with a mixture of food and snacks are really popular with soldiers. Our company has gathered up and sent several of those for our National Guard troops over there, and they've seemed very grateful for it when they get back.

    Re: Military question

We usually send food. We also sneak in some of their favorite soda (just make sure the cans are inside a zipped plastic bag in case of leakage). Reading material is also good. I have a buddy in Afghanistan and they don't get any TV or much news, so they like getting newspapers and magazines so they can read about what's going on back here - even though they won't get it for a month.

Most popular request from my friends over there. Monkey butt powder, chew, cigarettes, porn. I know it's not pc, but thats the gods honest truth. They get alot of food care packages from the Military wives, schools, etc.

Vodka. Put it in a big water bottle. We would save up about 7 or 8 liters, then have a little party to release some stress.

PS when the post office asks, dont them them what you put in the box. Just say dry foods.

Actually, I'm sitting at home in WDM right now. Gotta love 2 weeks of leave!

Anyway, I think it actually matters where he's going. If he's in Iraq, most likely he has a PX on post or one that's close by. If he's in Afghanistan, it is MUCH less likely that there is one near by. In my provence (the land size of Deleware), we don't have one. The closest one is a 35 minutes chopper flight away and you can't just fly there when you want. Anyway, I would suggest magazines, jerky, good candy, mixed nuts and whatever else that he may want. It's hard to say what someone's needs are unless they tell you because every location is different from the next.

    Re: Military question

My son has spent his share of time in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He enjoyed paperback books, magazines, letters (the more the better), and anything his mother could make in the kitchen and ship to him. Candid photos of friends, family, and special events help to not make them feel so removed from their normal world. He is stationed in Germany now and was allowed to take the wife, four children and the dog this time. He works long crazy hours but the wife and children are enjoying the adventure of living abroad.

Just talked to my son when he made his weekly call home. He said if your nephew is at a forward post, send him non scented baby wipes and Gold Bond Powder. Water is too precious in some areas to be used for bathing and washing uniforms.
