    Mention in Andy Katz's Blog

Nothing earth-shattering - just a mention about the Colorado game, & the new transfers for next year. He also mentions Keno on the hot seat and Izzo's anger in their game against the Hawks.
Dave Rose's take on the BYU Cougars and quick hits from around the nation - ESPN

Utah Utes, Illinois Illini. The University of Pennsylvania thought about following this pattern by calling themselves the Pennsylvania Pencils. However, they were afraid their students would start chanting "We're No. 2"

Re: Mention in Andy Katz's Blog

Katz is seeing the potential upside and downside. Not sure which he thinks is more likely.

I'm not sure I agree completely with his term "quick-fix" I realize there's risk involved here in the short-term, but I prefer so-called "D-1 cast-offs with baggage" to attempting a quick-build centered around jucos.

Something I've considered with the MSU transfers they appear to be team-rule violators, but Izzo is probably able to run the ship super-tight because 57 players are lining up at the back door at any minute.

Of course there's a chance acquiring "dismissed" players won't pan out, but I'm not seeing any felons among the incoming group. Find some talent and steer them in a good direction if it fails, it fails. But it could succeed.

Keno Davis likely done at Providence... maybe he'll end up back at Drake?

Why would Drake hire a guy that bolted as soon as he could and also showed that the year he was there was probably a fluke?

I agree the transfer route is the quick fix way and also a risky way too. We have to hope that it leads to bringing the program back to being relevant on the national scene again and that an appearance in the NCAA tourney in year 2 of Hoiberg will lead to top HS recruits seriously considering ISU again.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I think Keno is a good coach. He went out and got his money, can't blame a guy for that. Also, that's a tough gig out there. Look at all the competition in such a small area. He had some big wins last year but I haven't really followed them too much this year. I hope he gets some more time?!?!

He also had to kick three of his best players off the team this spring. The margin of error in the Big East is very small and losing three contributors does not help.

Neither does trying to strong arm a recruit who decided he really didn't want to be at Providence. He still isn't there, and the only thing tarnished was Davis's reputation.

There is one thing I can see which makes all these transfers a little less risky for ISU and Coach H.

All of them had to, or will have to, sit out a year. They can practice, but they couldn't/can't play in games.

During that year, Coach H. will get a chance to evaluate each of the players, to see if they are troublemakers, to see are willing to, as the Rock would say, "know their role" and accept it.

If trouble pops up for a player, they are gone and Coach H. goes back on the recruiting trail.

I see getting these players no more riskier than getting a highly touted freshman. You really don't know the risks with getting a player like that at all. This way, Coach H. knows all about why these players are no longer on their respective teams.

As for the "quick fix" angle of it, I agree. Yet I think Coach H. is smart enough to realize he is putting a band-aid on a gushing wound. Getting players like this will buy him a little time so he can stitch up the wound properly.

Re: Mention in Andy Katz's Blog

The way I see all these transfers...they all know they are on their last leg here. They screw up here and their chances of going professional greatly reduce. I feel like you've got a kid that's already sat out and transfered by the short and curley's. Plus, it's not like any of these kids were serious trouble makers...they may all have some issues that need to be managed but that is Fred's best trait as a coach I would assume.
