Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop

Only one thing was indisputable about this season.
The head coach had the time of his life.
“It’s probably one of his most enjoyable years in coaching,” said Erik Crawford, the director of basketball operations who played for Mac at Northern Iowa and was on his staff at Iowa State all four years. “Just the type of kids we have here. The guys have been fun to be around. It’s been fun from a coaching standpoint. He can coach the way he’s always wanted to coach.”
    What do you mean?
“When we got to the Big 12 level, there wasn’t quite as much coaching, not the way Mac likes to coach. We recruited the type of player we thought we needed to win in the Big 12, and not necessarily the type of kid coach likes to coach.
“To compete at that high level, you need some of the best athletes in America. You have to be more of a manager, to an extent.”
Here’s what Crawford means: At the “power league’’ level, you’re often coaching egos and personalities as much as you are basketball, if not more. You wade through the AAU coaches and middle men. It’s a lot more like “Blue Chips” and less like “Hoosiers.”

Well, gee, that should make our players feel good...

It's not a bad article. Pretty honest.

I disagree. I thought it was all over the place. Basketball is king in the MV, but Nebraska would build a statue of Doc Sadler if he made the Sweet 16? It was a puff piece to try and make everybody feel good about Mac's first season and for most, it probably did so.

Good for Greg. I'm glad he's "Happy on the Hilltop" because he wasn't worth a **** in Hilton.

Good article and verifies what we knew. He couldn't coach the players we had or manage egos.

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop

I understand, but it is still kind of a shot at Iowa State.

But to be fair, I had a hell of a lot more fun this year then I've had in a while at Iowa State games and I loved McDermott and wanted him to stay :)

Don't we know this all too well:

"...Creighton is 18-13 and finished in a tie for fourth place in the Missouri Valley. There were bad losses at Bradley and Drake. No signature win to speak of...."

Better get used to it Jay Fans

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop

We really won't know if he can cut it at Creighton either for a couple more years. Hope he does ok, but I have my doubts after seeing what he did at ISU with some pretty decent talent, at least last year.

The guy can coach but he certainly had his issues at ISU with player relations and with identifying B12 quality guard recruits (Buckley, Eikmeier, Brister, etc. killed him at ISU).

CU has a legit chance to win the Valley tourney. GMac is lacking quality wings on his roster this season and doesn't have much PG depth and those two factors, along with some missed late-game FTs and some bad luck, cost CU in most of their close Valley losses.

Is Shatel a pen name for "Matt Perrault"?

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop

Let's just make it plain and simple like this: GMAC couldn't cut it as a COACH in a big time conference. His record speaks for itself. No more excuses, thank you.

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop

That just confirms that he is not a big-conference coach materials.

“This is a job you treasure, a job you dream of,” said CU assistant Steve Merfeld, Evansville’s coach from 2002 to 2007 before being fired. “It’s a place where you can be successful and at the same time enjoy it. I’m not sure the coaches at BCS schools are truly loving their job. They love it twice a month when that paycheck comes in. Or, their wives love it.”

Wow - I'd love to see this guy applying for BCS job and then the AD says "I don't think you'll like it" Seems like a cheap shot for BCS schools coaches

Of all the questions I have about Hoiberg, dealing with AAU coaches/egos/entourages isn't one of them. He saw that crap in the NBA every day.

Oh barf. No one likes their job when they are losing. Everyone likes it when they are winning.
