    Iraqi timetables - OT

    From MSNBC.com

"Responding to a question about U.S. criticism, Maliki said: "The Iraqi government was elected by the Iraqi people and nobody (has the right to) put timetables ... on it," referring to conditions set by Washington for his government to achieve political reconciliation among Iraqi groups. "

Ummm. I believe we do have that right.

    Re: Iraqi timetables - OT

We can condition our presence and aid on timetables. However Iraq is a sovereign country which can do as it chooses.

    Exactly.

We have about 150,000 "individual" reasons - at last count. "HAD" about 3500 other reasons and that number gets added to daily. And will most likely add a few hundred billion other reasons over the long haul.

I'd say we have plenty of right to dictate a few terms.

They don't want to live up to them - they are more than welcome to ask us to leave, IMO.

I don't see Iraq trying to kick us out of the country do you? Just had a co-worker get back after serving nearly 2 years over there and the stories he tells doesn't come close to the crap the media feeds us. If we aren't careful how and when we pull out of there, all the work we've done so far could crumble.

Not in this thread but there are people out there that claim we are not wanted there and that is not true. The people that don't want us there are the idiot terrorists that would attack the innoncent Iraqi people regardless if we were there or not. And with the developments going on in Iran and Pakiastan having some presence in the middle east right now might prove to be a good strategic move down the road if things escalate there.

if you believe in it so much maybe you should put your body where your beliefs are and enlist...or maybe you don't feel THAT strongly...as long as it is someone else right?

    Nice straw man.

So you have to be a member of the armed forces to appreciate the good that they do?

    Give me a break.

no, i appreciate the effort. What I am saying is that we are running out of troops and most have done 2 or 3 tours. If people that aren't participating feel we should be there so strongly maybe they should help share the burden. Otherwise let our boys come home.

Not one person in this thread has said we need to obtain troop levels at their current amount. Even General Petreaus has said its not sustainable. I don't know how you are arguing with but it seems out of place/off topic.

    Re: Iraqi timetables - OT

Not only are we spending money militarily on them, we are also shelling out billions to maintain and improve their infrastructure. It's just a pretty common middle eastern practice for leaders to lay blame at the feet of the United States for their own corruption or inept policies. That is a big reason we are involved in the middle east in the first place.

The claim that the majority of Iraqis oppose the presence of US forces in Iraq is in fact true.

    I invite your attention to page 6 (there are 38 pages in all and I encourage you to read at least the first 10 pages) of the ABC News/USA Today/BBC/ARD Poll - Iraq: Where We Stand (March 19, 2007) "Ebbing Hope in a Landscape Marks a National Survey of Iraq";
