Not like that doesn't happen on a daily basis here. I think it's a legitimate question (and I wouldn't normally say that about a woodie post).

My answer is: it depends on how the team competes in those seasons/games and how good the opponents are.

    Re: coach paul rhoads

It is entirely possible. We are ISU, where history has taught us that 4-8 is way more likely than 8-4.

I think CPR is the best coach that we've had at ISU in my history of following the program, which only dates to Walden. Consequently, I think you give him SIX more years to get his system in place and to develop athletes. If we haven't won more than 6 games somewhere in there, then you have a case to fire him, but I think he'll be able to muster 6-7 wins every other year or so.

As good as he is, IMO, he still has his work cut out for him because we have a hard time recruiting quality athletes that can compete with top programs and consistently win 8 games.

I do believe that if he isn't able do it, it is unlikely that it we'll ever turn into a consistent winner.

    Re: coach paul rhoads

I'd think he'd probably have to. I think the thing with this fan base is we want this football program to get to the "next" step - consistently winning 8+ games a year, a step that McCarney wasn't able to take and hasn't been done consistently since both Majors and Bruce were coaching here. The problem is the football program can't take that "next" step if it falls off the step it's currently on - winning 6-7 games a year and making a bowl game - and we're precariously close to falling off that step as it is (assuming you eliminate the Chizik years from consideration).

If there was one thing McCarney did well, it was bringing passion back to the football fans, telling them it was okay to develop greater expectations (even if McCarney himself never accomplished those). If complacency or apathy sets back in, it's not just Rhoads in trouble, Pollard himself is in trouble. As Pollard said after he fired McCarney, he has to be able to sell hope to the fan base, and the fans had lost hope with McCarney. If the fans lose hope with Rhoads, this time I honestly think Pollard himself will be in trouble.

Agree, would need to know a lot more than the won/loss record. It's no sure thing that Rhoads or anyone else will turn ISU into a consistent winner, at least not in this conference. At the end of the day, you need players.

    Re: coach paul rhoads

I hope ISU will go for broke giving CPR what he needs to win. I think the AD realizes there are major headwinds ISU has to overcome for sucess. The more interesting question is: when CPR is sucessful (<8 wins), will he leave? CPR was likely sweating bullets this recruiting season. If a better, less stressful job comes along will he take it (I.e. Chizik)?

    +1

All division 1 coaching jobs in a major conference are equally stressful, just in different ways.

If he does it has a lot to do with scheduling. No way Paul is let go, nor should be.

    Re: coach paul rhoads

He had a chance to go this offseason and did not. Also it is much harder to win that many games given the new Big 12(10) schedule, so things could be interesting. The honeymoon phase will end for CPR if we do not make bowl games, I do not see this happening though.

I'd think this as well. That would make four straight years of 5-7/4-8. The only scenario where I can see going on to another year with the same coach would be if there is the promise of a better record due to a good deal of returning and talented upperclassmen.

Another thing to consider would be how KSU, KU, TT, and BU have fared over that time. Along with ISU, those programs were all in the 3-4 conference win range this year (with their vast resources, I expect UT to rebound pretty quickly). If those aforementioned four programs have made strides toward improvement, while ISU hasn't, that would seem to indicate a coaching problem.

If FH and KJ were to come through during that time in MBB and wrestling, ADJP would probably be strong enough to get one more shot at getting FB on track.

If Rhoads cant do it, we might as well fold up shop and quit. This is our shot and I have no doubt in my mind at all that he will be the man to see it through.
