    Talk about dominance

The top four positions at the end of the year standings (the byes awarded for the Big 12 tournament) have been won by the same four teams 17 of the last 20. Moreover, during the last 10 years, the same five teams appear 29 of 40 times.

Those teams are Baylor (7 times), A&M (6), Oklahoma (6), Iowa State (5), and Kansas State (5).

Although I like to see ISU up there time after time after time, it would be nice to see some other times become competitive in the Big 12. It really seems like there is big difference between the top 6 teams (being the above and Texas) of the conference and the bottom 6.

It is only getting worse to. In the first five years, nine teams made it to the top 4 at least once. Over the last five only 6 have made it there.

I think this same pattern follows the national rankings of women's college basketball. There are 8-10 teams that are always in the top 5 and then the rest of the top 20 are mediocre in comparison.

    Re: Talk about dominence

what about college football during the big 8 conference?

Off the top of my head... from 1955-1995 only 4 teams won the big 8:

    Oklahoma
    Nebraska
    Colorado (twice)
    Missouri (once)

same thing in the big 10 with OSU and Mich until iowa won it in 1980

glad those days are mostly over

Women's basketball seems to be in the position that men's basketball was 30 years ago, but I think the balance is slowly coming.

I think there are three reasons why there appears to be so much dominance in WBB vs. MBB.

    1. 15 scholarships. Say the top 15 or so schools had 2 less schollies a year. That is 30 more top 100 players available for schools 15-50. For example, Sydney Smallbone at TN hardly saw hardly any playing time at TN as a bench rider, but would have probably started and flourished at ISU.

    2. Top WBB players stay in college. Just imagine how dominant Texas would have been with Durant for four years. Its no coincidence that TN won 2 championships with Candice Parker, and UConn with both Tina Charles and Maya Moore. If these players go pro in sophomore or junior seasons, the playing field would level. Prince's departure to play pro in Europe set Rutgers back quite a bit. The biggest impact player now is at Baylor, and will be for 2 more years. That is just scary to think about. If a guy player was that good, he wouldn't have even went to college(Bryant/James).

    3. Tara, Geno, and Pat will always get the cream of the crop until they retire. Its a whole new ball game though, when they do.
