Three-time Kansas state champion going to Brown?

Zack Tanenbaum from Blue Valley North... right down the street from me. Undefeated state champion this year. 120-5 since his sophomore year. Anyone know if we had any interest? I've heard he reminds some of another wrestler from this area... Roberson.

I doubt it because of how many kids we have recently recruited at that weight area. He's not nationally ranked, but wouldn't doubt if he got a info from us. Purely a guess.

Kind of surprising he's not ranked, but that would make sense. Who are some of the kids in his weight class that we're going after?

Tanner Weatherman is a 3 time state champ in Iowa; his brother Trent is on the team and he's ranked #19 at 171 by TOM. The year before we got Mike England. We also have Cole Shafer, Matt Riley, and Tyler Christensen at 184. I believe Chris Spangler will wrestle 174 the next couple years. Plus we have no depth at the lower weight, which I think that is where our focus is.

This kid wrestled 135 the last two years and 119 as a sophomore.

I thought I seen he won the 171 pound title this past year.

My mistake, he did win 135. Maybe we were after him harder. Sorry.

Still not ranked, but it would definitely make sense that we should have been talking to him.

That's cool. Seems like we always need help at the lower weights and I've heard this kid is really good. An education at Brown might have something to do with it.

I read the article and got thinking that he really jumped in weight between junior and senior year. But never caught the point that it was talking about different kids. Yea, I'd say the Brown education had something to do with it.

With the 9.9 scholarship limit, I don't think that any school, be it ISU, Iowa, or any other traditional power, can compete with any of the Ivy schools for elite guys that have the grades to go that direction. Also, having worked with the Cornell Judo club in their wrestling building, some of those Ivy league teams have facilities that make ours look quaint.

Jackson would probably kill a man to have Cornell's facilities - a dedicated building with comparable mat space but also bleachers, dedicated locker rooms, weight room, and training room space. To compare, I've worked out in the ISU room, the Iowa room, and the Cornell building, and many other colleges wrestling rooms (since a lot of colleges let their Judo and BJJ clubs work out in the wrestling rooms) . Among those top three there is no question that Cornell has the edge facilities wise. It actually kind of makes sense, given the greatly reduced number of wrestling schools (and schollies) in the past few decades, that the elite guys who have smarts would group themselves into the few D-1 Ivy schools like Cornell. We can compete with most schools academically, but not Cornell or Brown.

Plus I'd much rather see Cornell win in than Penn State or Iowa.

If we are going after a KS kid I think Ryne Cokely would be good. 4 Time champion and I think he has wrestled well on a national level.

He is a unsigned senior, ranked #15 at 152 by intermat. He also has been working out with Eric Akin (former light wrestler for Iowa State). But haven't heard much about him in recruiting.

Sounds like he's headed to Wisconsin

“If I can win state a fourth time, that would be my proudest achievement,” said Cokeley, who hopes to attend Wisconsin and wrestle in the Olympics one day. “It’s just so hard to do. You’ve got to be really dedicated and can’t crack under the pressure. Of course, Roberson did without losing ever.”
Then again, Roberson, who went 153-0 in his career with the Huskies and went on to become an NCAA champion at Iowa State, views Cokeley as a worthy successor.
The two became friends and workout partners through the East Kansas Wrestling Club when Cokeley was a freshman and sophomore at St. James and Roberson served as an assistant coach.
