Bracketology - Women's College Basketball Brackets and Predictions - ESPN

Not the resume says anything different, but ISU please win tonight. Please win at KSU. Please win out. Let's get back to a 6 or 7 seed. DON'T want to play a 1 seed in the second round.

WOW...Iowa as a number 6 seed? Oh, that's right, they play in the great Big 10 (are they leaders or legends?).

Unfortunately for us, seeding is based on what we did, not on what we think we could have done. An 8-9 means we're about #32-36 and that's about right. Win and we climb. A win over Texas will be huge, notwithstanding their uncharacteristic loss to OU. Maybe we can learn something from that.

I must be missing why this is deserving of a "WOW".

Creme has Texas still in the tournament? No way. Their defense is awful.

let's hope so. I bet Texas players are motivated because of ESPN tonight.

Gayle has struggled to get commitment out of players that weren't her recruits, and it has shown on defense at times. I hope Prins n Pop take it to Gayle early. We have to contain their fresh guard too.

Gail called out her team big-time after the OU game, and said the turnaround must start tonight. I don't know - for how disinterested her team looks, I doubt that a coach's words make a big difference.

yeah, what is ISU getting teams that have been called out by their coaches. It happened at CU, KU, at Tech. Seriously.

there does seem to be a disconnect between Gail and her older players. There is still a chemistry problem there.

her biggest problem is trying to be offensive minded in a defense first league.

If UT was projected near a 13th seed, it made the ISU win more of a don't-want-to-lose than a big win. But I'll certainly take it.

I also hope to climb to at least a 7. It looks like a Sweet 16 could be the ceiling this season, so I'd want to get out of the 8/9 slot — at least there's a slim shot at pulling a second-round upset.

For some reason, though, I anticipate a similar fate when ISU gets a 4 instead of a 3, and being in the top half of the bracket. (Then again, that turned out to be OK two seasons ago when MSU knocked off a 1 seed)

I don't know if I bought the 13 seed. They were above us in RPI and had the same conference record with a harder schedule. It wasn't a must-win, but a loss would have put us in a bad situation.

    Re: Updated bracketology

I don't typically follow women's basketball all that closely outside of ISU, so I'm hoping some of you can help me. How are we projected in the 8/9 game yet we are still ranked. Where teams ranked similar to us and not ranked (like Iowa) are projected as 6 & 7 seeds. Are the polls really that bad or am I missing something?

Regardless, hopefully we can sweep the rest of the regular season, get to the bye in the tourney, and win a game or two, and get out of that 8/9 matchup. Would you say a 7 seed is the ceiling right now? Or would a 6 seed be possible if we were to win the big 12 tourney?

Because in Women's basketball name recognition means even more than it does in the Men's game. And ironically enough, Iowa State has been a recognizable name in WBB since the late 1990s. ISU is near the top of the Big 12 standings and is in the NCAA Tournament almost every year, and Fennelly is considered one of the "premiere" WBB coaches in the nation. The line "We Are Iowa State" doesn't typically apply to ISU WBB (except with getting paired against UConn in the tourney seemingly on an annual basis), in fact, it's quite the opposite - we tend to get a lot of respect and national media attention that we typically don't deserve, such as this year, simply because ISU WBB has been a national name for more than a decade now.

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

I don't get your follow-up. If we get more recognition, and we're ranked #~23, why are we projected in the 8/9 game? Because we're respected as a program? If that were the case, we should be ranked #29-36. We're actually getting "no love" in being projected in that game. I think ESPN is saying they don't think this team deserves our ranking. I think if Fennelly were a woman, we'd have a lot more exposure on ESPN, but thankfully he's who he is. I think the NCAA likes us, see home site selections, but that's a money deal. They want tickets sold. Their seeding is more important in the end, anyway.

    Re: Updated bracketology

I'm hoping we can end up with a 6 or 7 seed. I think to have a chance at a 6 seed, we need to get a win at Kansas State and beat a top tier team in the tournament.
