    Perspective

If my memory is correct, we have only been blown out twice all year. We have had NCAA tournament teams at ISU that were blown out more than that. So despite putting together a roster that hasn't played that much together, that is short on numbers, has young players playing significant minutes, and has had guys suspended, hurt or sick the last month, this team has stayed competitive for the most part. They play hard. You can tell they bought in, don't quit and are bunch of fighters. If next years teams has those elements with the increased talent, look out.

Admirable accomplishments. Only element missing is a record that reflects it, at least somewhat.

Nobody can expect every close game to go in the win column, but just picking up those close losses (not even finding a way to beat Missouri or A&M, or even Tech), and the conference record is 5-7, tied for sixth.

    Re: Perspective

McDoormat lost more Big 12 games by 15 points or more.... than he won at ISU.

We are taking baby steps forward... with a really small/depleted roster (talent wise)

This. We and every national person who has taken even a small look at the Cyclones realize this...we are headed in the right direction with Hoiberg. Yeah it sucks losing games due to lack of depth and sticking with teams up until the last 3 minutes...but we are not being blown out and next year will hopefully be our "win close" year or even "win big" year so that we won't even have to worry about losing the games in the last 3 mins...They key is making this a 1 year looking to the future. Otherwise we could become Cub-like with saying next year is our year.

I don't think Fred is going to need as many "first years" as Greg.

Here's some more perspective: The last time we finished last in the conference? 1980-1981. Johnny Orr's first year as coach.

I agreed with everything you said except they have been blown out 3 times right? at Mizzou, at Colorado, and at Kansas

    Re: Perspective

Notice all the @way, we have not and will not be blown out at Hilton. And those are the games i get to see in person, so i have seen great effort all year. I believe the attendance reflects the play of these guys as well.

    Re: Perspective

All the perspective in the world does not take away the pain of these close losses. You would think by pure chance we would at least luck into one of those wins given how many times we have been in position.

    True.

ISU got lucky on the buzzer-beater vs. Creighton, but that doesn't offset four or five other games where a lucky bounce or a single possession could have swung it the other way.

People like to say "you make your own luck," which has some truth to it. A little luck here or there would be nice.

This season has some parallels to 09-10 in a similar regard. How many "almosts" were there last year? Maybe six or seven?

Agreed. Look at what he's already done with 6-7 scholarship players and a walk-on this year (4 of them being freshman). They're on a bad losing streak and he still gets them to play their ***** off. I have a feeling under Greg our team would have thrown in the towel. I can't wait to see what Fred can do with a full roster and more talent.
