    Scoring Points

This may have already been posted in some way or another but Mike4Cy and I were talking about this the other day; Iowa State has to be one of the highest scoring teams from a major conference that is in last place. Well here is the Big 12 scoring, we are the 5th highest scoring team in the big 12.

    Team -- PPG -- PA
    #2 Texas -- 75.7 -- 59.5
    #1 Kansas -- 83.3 -- 64.8
    #17 Texas A&M -- 70.6 -- 60.9
    #21 Missouri -- 83.8 -- 70.7
    Baylor -- 71.5 -- 62.5
    Colorado -- 79.9 -- 71.8
    Nebraska -- 67.5 -- 58.8
    Kansas State -- 73.2 -- 65.8
    Oklahoma State -- 69.4 -- 66.8
    Oklahoma -- 66.9 -- 67.7
    Texas Tech -- 73.3 -- 76.5
    Iowa State -- 75.5 -- 68.8

Now for last place teams in major conferences…yep we are indeed the highest scoring of these teams

    Iowa State 75.5
    Wake Forest 68.7
    DePaul 67.9
    Indiana 71.9
    South Carolina 69.1
    Auburn 63.3
    Bradley 64.3
    Arizona State- 63.6

Mike got these nubmers off of ESPN.com, I just thought I would throw them out to see if other people thought it was as interesting as we did.

We could score 100 a game...but give up 150. Thats how it's been going.

    Re: Scoring Points

For comparison you should post Defensive points given up, I would expect since out tempo is top ten in the nation our points are up and points given up are also up.

    Re: Scoring Points

Why would you have a MVC team and no Pac 10 team?

    Arizona State- 63.6

    Re: Scoring Points

This is a big reason why I'm excited about our future. Fred will likely never have a team with the lack of depth and athleticism that this team has currently. He's finding a way to score points, with a team that isn't overly blessed with scoring firepower, but unfortunately, our lack of athleticism and depth can't stop the opponent in crunch time. Also, due to our problem in the paint, we have a hard time rebounding, which will cost you dearly in the last two minutes.

I think WORST CASE in the next two seasons, we'll have more athleticism (better defense), more post presence ( improved rebounding) and much more depth (better stamina in the final 2 min). Even if our offensive scoring is stagnant, we'll be in a much better position to win these games.

Better defense, rebounding and depth should translate into at least slight improvement in scoring totals as well.

    Re: Scoring Points

If you think about it, it is actually pretty impressive we have been able to average so many points with such limited depth. We basically have 5 scoring threats. Bubu and Godfrey have had a few games in double digits, but for the most part it is all our starting five. Makes me pretty excited for the future when we will have significantly more scorers.

With one or two glaring exceptions it appears that the scoring margin is where the correlation with W&L's resides.

For contrast, here are the 15 best seasons for ISU by defensive points allowed (going back to 85-86 when the 45 second shot clock was adopted).

    Re: Scoring Points

You can't just look at points scored, or points allowed. You have to look at the difference between the two.

You can look at them independently to establish trends but, yes, winning is still contingent upon scoring more points than your opponent on a game by game basis.

Lots of McD years in there, with overall scoring margins. Not shocking, but definitely interesting. Also looking at those stats, it just shows how good those 99-00 and 00-01 team were.
