    Internet connection sharing/tethering for Android

My wife is going to be getting an HTC Evo Shift. I have a Windows mobile phone, and use the nifty app WMWiFiRouter to share the phone's 3G connection. WMWiFiRouter can share the phone's 3G connection via WiFi, USB, or Bluetooth. Also, it doesn't require any kind of software on the clients, so the 3G connection can easily be shared with just about any device.

When searching the web regarding tethering options for Android, it seems that one has to root the phone in order to share 3G/4G via WiFi or USB, and according to some posts, setting up sharing is not always easy. PdaNet is available, but that only works with Windows clients, and only supports USB and Bluetooth (noWiFi). WMWiFiRouter doesn't have an Android version.

I'm just curious if anybody does tethering with Android, how you do it, and what apps you use.

    Thanks!

Re: Internet connection sharing/tethering for Android

I have the Samsung Mesmerize and I am with US Cellular. I pay an extra $25 / month to have tethering available and it's worth all that and more since I travel with a laptop at certain times of the year to places that might not have wireless. No app installation was needed above what came with the phone. I go to the apps, tap on 'wireless modem', tap on the check box and it gives me a password to type into my laptop when it appears on the available networks. Works pretty fast.

I drove from Des Moines to Mason City last weekend and had it turned on the whole way up so my daughter could play on her ipod touch. Worked great for that as well. It does use up battery life faster but when I'm using it for that, I either plug it in to the wall or the car charger and it's fine.

    My experience anyway.

Excellent site cjb1978. To the OP, if you are looking for recommendations for what to root your phone to, I would suggest Fresh. I've rooted my EVO with several different roms and Fresh seems to be the easiest to navigate and improves battery life, which is essential for the EVO. Good luck

Re: Internet connection sharing/tethering for Android

Not sure if this works for all phones/carriers but it did for my Incredible on Verizon.

NOTE: This could get you in trouble with your carrier but I doubt they monitor it.

Go to phone and dial ##778
    Press call
    Pick Edit Mode
    Password is 000000(6 zeros)
    Go to M.IP Default Profile
Look for NAI and DUN NAI
Change the DUN NAI to match NAI
    Press menu and commit modifications.

So I can root my phone and tether without having to pay US Cellular $25 / month?

Possibly. I'm not sure how it works with the Mesmerize but with the Desire I've been told there's no way they can tell, so long as you're not going nuts with usage.

From what I've read, there's nothing wrong with rooting your phone and using the wireless tethering app. So it doesn't matter if they know. Now if you use the other method I posted, that's a different story.

If they know you're tethering, they're going to make you pay the fee to tether
