    Boy is born without cerebellum

Tragically, that happens on occasion. Now, here's the really interesting part: the boy is living fairly close to a normal life!

When he was 1 year old, doctors did an MRI, expecting to find he had a mild case of cerebral palsy. Instead, they discovered he was completely missing his cerebellum -- the part of the brain that controls motor skills, balance and emotions.

"'He has the MRI of a vegetable,' one of the doctors said to us."

Chase eventually managed to sit up on his own, something he shouldn't have been able to do without a cerebellum to provide balance. Next he learned to crawl, first dragging himself military-style, then pushing himself upright. Now, he's learning to walk.

Chase also loves to play on his Ipad with doting brother Alex. A team of therapists has been working with him since he was an infant, and he has a special "sensory room" at home full of lights and sounds and tactile things -- like mirrors -- to visually motivate him, Britton said. Soon, she hopes he can begin horseback-riding therapy.

Cool story, bro. No, seriously, cool story.

It's amazing how you can take a key part of the body required for functioning away and the human body just adapts.

I could believe this...your brain can learn to re-wire itself pretty effectively. There have been multiple cases of people having brain injuries and regaining motor functions.

Re: Boy is born without cerebellum

The brain is ridiculously plastic, especially in kids. You can remove half of it, and lead a 'normal' life. You could be missing an area of the brain and sometimes not even know it.

And occasionally, these brain 'defects' unlock ridiculous potential, such as being able to play every song perfectly after you hear it once, or being able to perform calenderical calculations.
