Des Moines first "Gastro Pub" huh?

I'd never heard the term before, but DM will soon have its first "Gastropub" according to this blog:

The Kirkwood Lounge, occupying the former Azalea space at 400 Walnut Street, will be the first restaurant to officially claim the moniker “Gastro Pub.” (Note: a Gastro Pub is a bar/meeting house which generally carries a wide beer selection, a chef-driven drinks menu, and a chef-driven bar food menu which includes twists on bar and comfort food classics. It is meant as a hang out spot with excellent food and drinks) Chef Sean Wilson has a new simplified menu of classed-up bar foods, which is indicative of the GP concept, along with a drinks menu, beer, and wine.

No one ever heard of a gastro pub in the U.S until Gordon Ramsey starting throwing out that name. Can't wait to visit.

I've been to many a Gastro Pub. Really, its just a bar's excuse to charge a lot of money for beer, and say chicken wings with Bearnaise sauce. As long as the chef is good, it can make for some really great and interesting takes on well known food. Because of the twists, some items miss the target, and others are great, which of course is typical of most menus. Generally I like places like this.

So it's basically an expensive version of the High Life?

I'm sure it will be good, that's just how I'm reading this.

Does "gastro pub" mean the food/drink will give you diarrhea? If so I will be expecting Busch Light and chili cheese fries or blazing hot wings

Haha close but no cigar, they are gastropods. It means something like stomach-foot in Greek.

Actually its a sister restaurant to the Star Bar (ie same owner & a friend of mine)

they are also going to open a taco/burrito bar when Zen used to be, its basically attached to the Kirkwood Lounge, which is across the street from Fongs Pizza

"Gasto Pub" is way better than what they originally called the genre... "FARTSO BARS"

Agreed, but Fartso Bars was still a step up from their original label of Dysentery Diners.

In all seriousness, I am anxious to see this space after the latest remodel as it was really cool as Azalea with its 24' ceilings, and all the woodwork. It probably makes sense given the location in the Court District to make it a bit more of a casual venue vs. the white table clothed Azalea. I hope they add some patio seating to help liven up that section of Walnut Street.

Zen was a cool space, but I never heard anyone list them as one of the favorite Sushi places so it didn't surprise me when it closed. The taco/burrito place should be a good fit as it fills a niche for Mexican food downtown when you don't want to splurge for the higher-end, Dos Rios.

Gotta admit, it would be pretty cool to live in the Kirkwood apartments and have these two options located on the ground floor of your building.
