    Former Cyclone Cory Johnson

Has helped Valpo climb to the top of the Horizon League for their best season since they joined the league- beating Butler for the first time in 16 years.

Just had to plug my alma mater.

    Re: Former Cyclone Cory Johnson

I haven't watched him play since he left the Cyclone program but he must have reformed his skills a bit. 15 ppg isn't too bad. He has been mentioned a few times over the last couple years. I still don't think he would have been serviceable to ISU against Big 12 opponents

That is what i was thinking, maybe not a big 12 kind of dependable player, but he sounds like he has embraced a leadership role at VU.

Johnson had some offensive ability, but didn't have the quickness or height to make it happen in the Big XII. He did have some leaping ability and his toughness and effort were never in question.

Good for Cory. Always felt he got the short end of the stick here. He showed a lot of character sticking to his commitment to ISU after Wayne Morgan was let go.

He absolutely would have contributed at Iowa State. He was never going to be a Big 12 star because he was a tweener. But he was also a hard worker with a good skill set. He would have made the most of what he had. Asinine for McValley to push him to move on.

I randomly played a game of basketball with him when I was at ISU at Lieds. I thought he was pretty good, but then again, I am god awful.

He still would've gotten owned by all the post guys who have owned us this year so I'm not seeing the difference. He's 6'6" if even that. Ejim is taller with roughly the same build, more athletic, and a better basketball player and he's getting owned. CJ wouldn't have helped with anything other than depth.

Why would you put a 6-6 guy in the post? You wouldn't, so that takes care of that "problem." He would be playing the four. Ejim is a true freshman who isn't a four but is playing the four because ISU doesn't have one. Imagine that. Johnson is now 6-7 and 225. Would only help with depth? ISU is headed for 2-14 in the league and has seven players and you're saying it couldn't use some depth in the form of a solid hard working senior? Good God.

    Re: Former Cyclone Cory Johnson

I watched him play when Valpo played KU few months ago. He may not be athletically gifted, but he understands the game VERY well. He makes the right play and uses his body very well (box out, set screens etc). He also have decent shooting range. He was definitely hard worker, pretty similar to how Kevin Love plays (ofcourse KL is 10X better).

Yeah, ISU can't be wasting their time on players who end up leading their teams to conference titles and NCAA tourney bids. Probably a good thing that he left 'cause he wouldn't have been able to do anything in the almighty B12 Conference. In the meantime, Cory's laughing all the way to Selection Sunday while Cyclone fans are once again "waiting for next year."

Hey, how about an update on the Dykstra kid?? I'm sure he is tearing it up at some lower level of competition as well. Give me a little Wes Eikmeier while you are at it. And I haven't seen a Mike Taylor update in a while. How about Marcus Brister...what is he up to?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

What.... He is a solid Horizon/MVC type player, not a Big 12 player. His prescence on ISU today would not have put us in the tournament.

It's kind of funny how whenever a player that leaves ISU early is brought up on this site, it turns out they were never worthy of playing for ISU in the first place and the program is better off without them. Yet, the player(s) in question often have gone on to acheive some level of personal success elsewhere.

When your team is among the bottom-feeders in the conference on a perrenial basis, these kind of assessments of former players start to sound stupid. Of course Cory Johnson could have made a difference this season! Maybe not the Tourney this year, but possibly a few more conference wins for some momentum that could help future recruiting to get to the Tourney down the road.
