    'Best Team in the Nation'

So, I'm in Iowa City for the weekend, and splashed across the front page of the Press-Citizen is a picture of Jake Christensen signing autographs at Kids' Day at Kinnick yesterday. Right above this picture is, in bold print, "Best Team in the Nation".

The article consists entirely of kids from 8 to 13 giving their thoughts on the season, including such gems as "last year we really they had a down year, so I think they'll go 8-4 or 9-3 this year" or "the recievers dropped a lot of balls, so that was kind of a bummer." (referring to the scrimmage yesterday)

As amusing as the article was for front page news on a Sunday paper, we're either too pessimistic, or fans in Iowa City are too optimistic for the coming season (especially when a quote from a pre-teen graces the headline news on a Sunday). Can't wait to get back to Ames this afternoon -- the humidity in Iowa City is stained black and gold right now.

Re: 'Best Team in the Nation'

I read the PC online every morning. I just about spit out my coffee when I saw that headline, then proceeded to laugh my way through the story. I've never seen a journalist try so hard to pass off halfway-decent soft news as really terrible hard news, and in the Sunday edition, no less. Come on back, buddy! Let's get you out of there- it's not safe for higher brain functions.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: 'Best Team in the Nation'

Some comments from Hawkeye posters on HR. Is it all or nothing for Hawk douches?

"I guess, on the positive side, it would be very difficult to have a worse year than last year, things have got to get better, right? { a 5 win season would be a killer}"

"Overall, I was disapointed with the energy level today. I saw absolutely nothing different scheme wise. I think we're in for another season of predicatable offense and predictable defense. I can't believe we haven't changed anything schematically for like 7 years now..."

"O-Line was bad, no ifs ands or buts."

    "QB play was uninspiring."

"I don't see this speed at WR that some were talking about during the summer."

"I am happy we have 2 weeks before our first game because I don't think the coaches will be excited with what they saw. I thought the whole team looked flat. This may be due to the extended period of two-a-days they have gone through."

"My opinion we looked like we are a young inexperience O line. We had troubles and especially when Def blitz."

It's nice to see Jake Christiansen wearing some REAL football colors!

Is it me, or is he shorter than the kids in that pic?

Re: 'Best Team in the Nation'

Seems like the chokeyes have their normal, COMICALLY high preseason expectations of another average team that will turn to moping and excuses about 4-5 weeks in.

nothing against christensen other than that hes a sqwauk, but IDK why but I have always hated the number 6 on quarterbacks...i can't really explain it, all i know is really can't wait to see his jersey in the dirt, especially on the 15th of septiembre!

Re: 'Best Team in the Nation'

From everything I've heard, if healthy, Christensen will be a good one for Iowa. Plus, it doesn't hurt that they're loaded at WR for the next 3 years. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
