    Veggies Shortage

Produce prices skyrocket with freeze in Mexico, Southwest | kgw.com | News | Portland, Oregon

He said this is the worst produce situation he's seen in 25 years in the business.
Next week, lettuce and spinach prices are expected to rise. Normal prices likely won't return until new crops in Mexico start producing again in late March and early April.

The lettuce heads will be smaller as outside leaves are removed.

The Roma tomatos supply has dried up.

Wendy's will give you a tomato only if you ask for it.

    Eat more chicken.

also, a lot of acres in California did not get planted last spring and summer due to water concerns. Water usage is a huge politcal issue out there and some areas are limiting water usage for Ag.

Maybe this will help persuade more people to plant their own gardens. That is one way to feed a family for much cheaper.

Looks like canned vegetables for a while. 60 day wait really isn't that bad when you think about it.

I plant my own garden because I like the fresh veggies but I'm not so sure it is that much cheaper. Especially if you put a dollar value on your time. Every year as I'm digging up a row of potatoes, I'm thinking to myself how easy it would have been to go buy a couple of 10 pound bags for $10.

True. But if you have the time, it can save you a lot of money. Especially if you have someone that is good at canning or freezing of various vegetables.

I like being able to go out and pick something fresh to eat, especially lettuce and tomatoes. My favorite thing I have is the asparagus, because it produces every year with minimal maintenance.

All the rain in California didn't help either. I've seen some pretty poor produce in the last couple of months. Looks like that trend will continue for at least a couple more.
