John Walters' comments on 810 in KC this morning

Nothing earth shattering but here's what he said:

-Fans growing increasingly frustrated with inability to close out games
-Fred can only play one style given the players; would like to change it up but can't
-6 games tied or led in last minute and lost every one
-Fred has great relationship with the players
-Fred cut practices back to one hour a while ago to save legs
-Kevin Love called in to Fred's show recently as "Kevin from Minnesota" and asked Fred his favorite Timberwolves player. Fred jokingly said Darko Milicic.
-Fred was widely considered an NBA GM in-waiting. Many in the league thought he'd get a GM position in the next couple of years and were kind of surprised he left the Timberwolves/NBA.
-Matt Abdelmassih (asst Dir of Ops) has good recruiting connections in New York and Fred and staff will spend more time recruiting that area.
-Jake Anderson has told Fred he's playing too many minutes and gets gassed
-Did not root for Auburn in NC game. Thought Chizik left ISU the wrong way.
-Had great things to say about Orr's sports bar. ISU makes good money from bar sales.
-Fred could still beat anyone on the team in HORSE. He's made 75 out of 75 free throws for AHA charity drive. He faces off against Alford in next round.

I think you can see this. He isn't playing with the same intensity and strength as he was earlier in the year. It's just too bad there isn't a solution because Jake I feel could take over a game when he's fresh.

I felt all year that he and DG can do a lot of the same things, I'd like to see them give each other a rest every once in awhile.

Interesting. Somewhat obvious, but still interesting to hear from John himself.

Jake'll kind of drive you nuts. He'll do those crazy drives and acrobatic shots, but then he'll go on stretch of 2 or 3 turnovers/blocked shots in a row. Definately seems to have rubbed off on Scott and Bubu though. I love when those guys take it to the hole, even when they get blocked.

Not hatin' or trying to spark another argument, just a joke. I totally support ISU using it for top donors, and would love to be one myself someday.

Re: John Walters' comments on 810 in KC this morning

Thanks for the post. Nice to know that our opinions as fans are not that far from what the coaches are thinking. We all wish we had more depth and more options. Unfortunately we don't ... so we will probably see DG get it in the final minutes many more times. With probably the same result. It would be nice to be able to do something different ... but what? Play Bubu?

With only Bubu around to spell the guards, its a damn good thing DG is virtually tireless.

+1, love the effort even if its blocked. The K-State game Bubu started he shot 9 free throws!

Re: John Walters' comments on 810 in KC this morning

I thought Jake was moving a little tentative in the K-State game. Kind of like he was still bothered by cramps or worried about getting them again. Our kids are doing a great job just staying in Big 12 games playing as many minutes as they are.

    Agree on all counts.

Also, Jake and our guards need to do a better job of drawing contact. We seem to always do everything in our power to get a shot off, and often times it gets blocked. A lot of times when you get to the hoop, you have to force contact even if it means you have no chance of making the shot. Bubu is shooting a good amount of free throws but I'd like to see Jake and DG shooting a lot more of them...

Fred has nothing to work with this year. I think he has a done a good job.
