Some thoughts/information on Elgin Cook's situation

I wanted to take a minute this afternoon to address the situation going on with 2010 Iowa State basketball signee Elgin Cook. By now, the majority of you have seen this story that was recently published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Star player Cook leaves Milwaukee Hamilton - JSOnline

While I can't and won't disclose all of the things that I've heard about the situation, I will say this. Do not be too quick to judge this young man on what is currently going on.

I've heard that Elgin is now living in Texas with his father, former NBA player Alvin Robertson. I don't know any other details on that situation but like his high school coach said in the piece that is linked above, what's important here is that Elgin is currently safe.

As far as his future with Iowa State goes, anything that you've heard is probably only a rumor at this point. I don't believe that anybody actually knows what is going on right now. I imagine that the Iowa State coaching staff will meet with Elgin and his family at some point in the near future to discuss the multiple possibilities.

Remember that Elgin broke his wrist recently. That was the start of what has been a tough year for the young man. With this most recent setback, maybe going to prep school or a junior college will be an option and hopefully Iowa State could sign him in the future. Maybe that would be best for the young man, Iowa State and everybody involved. Or, maybe he'll work things out and be in Ames this fall. There are just too many questions right now that nobody knows the answers to.

Just please avoid rushing to judge Cook in this situation and let's see how things play out.

    Thanks a bunch.

I agree with your sentiments there Chris. I hope he keeps his academics in line, and is able to come to ISU next year.

Well said Chris. Hopefully he shows up next year, but whatever is best for him. Looks like he could really excel in our offense.

"We embrace that challenge and what it presents to us. I’m going to approach all 12 games this way: We’re going to win them all. If we prepare and then go out and execute, we’re going to win all 12. Now how many are we going to end up with at the end of the year? I don’t know, and you’re right, I won’t put a number on it."- Paul Rhoads on having the toughest schedule in the Big 12

Re: Some thoughts/information on Elgin Cook's situation

Chris, any idea on whether his school is on semesters, trimesters, or quarters? I ask because if he is on a trimester or quarter system, he may be close to the start/end of a quarter he may not need to make up much of anything. Also, I would think it would be easier for him to make something like that up in the summer if he still had his heart set on coming to Ames this fall.

I didn't realize who his father was. If he has even a fraction of his dad's defensive abilities...wow.

Great post Chris! I like that you tell us Fonzies to chill. We actually need to be told that at times. I also appreciate that if you have insider info that you think we should know, you share it with us. Keep up the good work!

That's ok. I expect the "idiots" to respond as well. It comes with the territory.

Alvin was a defender..... multiple Defensive Player of the Year Awards and Elgin is twice the defensive player as the "Old Man".

Still very much commited to ISU!

Wow...just wow. Went and read the initial thread and it made me sad that some jump to the conclusions they do with zero basis.

I'm really just shaking my head at the idiocy that was displayed by a couple posters.
