    Cool Hoiberg Story

I don't know if this story is well known but it is the first time that I have heard it.

This morning on a Twin Cities radio station, the morning guys started to talk about Fred during a sports segment with a local TV sports guy. They said a lot of positive things about him as a person and the stuff he is doing down in Ames. These guys use to have Fred on their radio station from time to time to talk about Timberwolves stuff. So one of the guys started telling his favorite Fred story.

They were asking Fred when he first knew that "The Mayor" nickname had become big. Fred said that when he was with the Bulls and they were playing the Lakers, during the pre-tip hand shakes Shaq said something to him like "Oh hell no, The Mayor is in the house".

Even Shaq recognizes when he is privileged to be in the presence of Fred.

I think that's more Shaq "playfully mocking" Hoiberg, but from Shaq, being playfully mocked is the height of compliments.

I'm sure Gilbert Arenas would disagree.

That's what he wrote in Can I Keep My Jersey. He was on the Lakers Summer League squad or something, and Shirley went to introduce himself to Shaq and Shaq said, "Oh, I know who you are."

    Re: Cool Hoiberg Story

Does anyone know the origins of the nickname, by that I mean who actually first called him The Mayor?
I've read it was Vitale who I can't stand so I'm hoping he didn't actually start such a great nickname

A local writer did it I believe. He mentioned how Hoiberg got a vote in an election for Mayor.

I knew about the write-in votes and was hoping it was someone local or within the program that actually started calling him that.

    Re: Cool Hoiberg Story

"He responds to the nickname “The Mayor,” which former Cyclone Doug Collins bestowed upon him in college because of Hoiberg’s popularity in town."

Go Cyclones - The Mayor returns

Just goes to show what a big deal his recruitment was since Collins' senior year was 90-91 and hoiberg's freshman year was 91-92.
