    Prius Drivers???

Are there any Toyota Prius Drivers on the board?

We've been looking at possibly getting one and my sister works for TFS so we are eligible for a family discount. Just curious to here in any opinions from Prius owners.

    Thanks.

    Re: Prius Drivers???

I don't own one and being a car guy I'm usually anti hybrid but...

The Prius has proven to be a very reliable car.

The 3rd generation gets great gas mileage.

The interior is very room for a vehicle it's size.

They have very good resale value.

If the person you are buying it for plans on putting on some serious miles than it may pay off but I would also consider some alternatives like the 2012 Ford Focus and 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Both get 40mpg, are not hybrids, and offer more bang for the buck. You're probably paying $5K extra for the Prius over a comparable non-hybrid and it's hard to justify that $5K for 10 mpg.

Just traded my 2007 Pruis for a 2011 Ford fusion Hybrid. I like the Ford alot better than the Prius. As for trade invalue, the Prius has lost alot ground(value). Toyota has lost due to the recalls and warranty issues.

I have put 4,000 miles on the Fusion and Love it!

    Re: Prius Drivers???

I drive a 2010 Prius and have been much more satisfied than I anticipated I would be. I get about 45-48MPG in the summer. It falls to 35-40MPG in the cold weather have been recently experiencing. Everything about it has been good, and as stated earlier, it has more room than you would think. The back seats comfortably seats 2 without a problem, and I have taken my 3 children (18, 20, and 22) and fit without a problem.
I will say that I did not really have time to price compare when I purchased the car due to my son totaling my SUV last year only a couple of days before the end of the year, and needing to buy a replacement by Dec 31 (tax purposes). Mine has a lot of options (sunroof, leather seats, navigation system), so I spent probably too much on it so I will be driving it for quite a while (the SUV was a 2000 so I keep my cars for awhile). But I am confident I can drive this car that long and avoid major maintenence issues (at 25K miles so far).

I loved mine so much I just traded it in for a new one. Best car I've ever owned. Reliable. Great gas mileage (51 mpg is not an exageration). Roomy. Just fantastic. Great safety and crash tests. Not great on ice as it is light.

    Re: Prius Drivers???

    Thanks everyone for their input.

We test drove one this weekend and we were quite surprised at how roomy they are- not much difference when compared to our '04 Camry.

My wife went into this process thinking she wanted a Sienna and I wanted something smaller (better MPG) because 75% it is just her in the car driving back and forth to work, so we'll see how it all gets worked out.

    Re: Prius Drivers???

Oh and like someone said before, the resale is really good. My wife crashed her 07 in 2009 and it was still worth 19K and we had paid 22-23k i think.

    Re: Prius Drivers???

I wouldn't own a Prius mostly because I wouldn't trust it in a crash. Seems like it's a tin can on wheels plus with all the recalls just how much can you really trust it? I also would not like the lack of trunk space that a regular sedan provides. Gas mileage isn't the biggest factor I look at when shopping for cars, construction and space comes well before that.

I was surprised to find out that it gets very good crash test ratings and seems like drivers in this thread have survived a wreck in their Prius and lived to buy another one.

To me the recalls seemed to be way over blown by the media. Probably due to the fact that many competitors have been looking to find a chink in Toyota's armor as they have been lagging in sales. Every major car manufacturer has recalls.

Safety-4/5 stars in frontal and 5/5 on side impact. What car do you want to compare it to? How about a big Chevy Impala?

    Frontal Prius
    Head Injury Criterion 392 HIC
    Left Femur Load 572 lbs
    Right Femur Load 650 lbs

    Frontal Impala
    Head Injury Criterion 411 HIC
    Left Femur Load 911 lbs
    Right Femur Load 616 lbs

    Side Prius
    Thoracic Trauma Index 33
    Pelvis Deceleration 56

    Side Impala
    Thoracic Trauma Index 40
    Pelvis Deceleration 55

Capacity-More Luggage capacity than a Toyota Camry. More luggage capacity than a cadillac CTS, Impala, etc.

Recalls-A 2009 Prius has had 3 recalls. 2 are for stickers. One is for the floor mats.

my wife can tell you from experience that it's safe. She T-boned an old Buick going about 35 and she was fine. the front crumpled in like it should, the air bag deployed and she walked away just fine.

Also the lack of trunk space is a ridiculous statement. It's a hatch back and the back seats fold down. i'm able to haul quite a bit in that car if need be. i would have to say it has more room then a regular sedan like a Camry or whatever.

The recalls were awesome if you were in the market for a new car. I got my new RAV4 at 0% and they took 3k off and 2 years free maintenance. I bought it during the whole recall time period.

So basically from this, and the previous replies, the car has pretty much everything you need: high gas mileage, high safety ratings, and decent room/storage.... now all you have to do is just figure out if you can get past the fact that it's one of the ugliest cars to ever disgrace the face of this planet, and you should be set.
