Just a possibility I hadn't really considered before

I'm just curious as to whether or not Hoiberg's strategy of bringing in talented transfers has anything to do with the conference realignment talk we had over the summer. Maybe he feels we need to take a risk and be as competitive as we can soon so that we are more of an appealing school for the Big East if it comes to it.

It's definitely not the main reason, but it may play a part in it. He also probably wants us to get off to a good start as soon as we can so that recruiting can be boosted early on in his tenure.

I don't think recruiting would be a big problem in the Big East. We are better than half the teams in the league.

I agree with that, that's not what I was meaning to say though, haha. I was just saying that the main reason CFH is bringing in the transfers is so that we can get off to a competitive start faster than we otherwise would. He will be able to recruit better if we are a more competitive team, we will win more (obviously), excitement will be up, classes are more balanced out, etc. are all reasons that he's handled the roster the way he has. I'm just wondering if the conference realignment factor may have played a part, too.

Aren't those always the goal? Conference realignment talk or not, those should always be on the mind of a head coach no matter what.

I think Fred saw the talent, and took advantage of it. We've seen it this year. The Big 12 is very winnable if we just get the talent, which he did. Now we just need to produce next year.

I think Kansas showed that basketball prestige has nothing at all to do with conference re-alignment. Football is calling 100 percent of those shots.

I really doubt it. Babb and I believe Booker were here before the conference crap got too far this summer. And I think we were talking to Royce before that too.

I think Fred (thinking like an NBA guy) wanted to balance classes and to get talent in here fast.

ISU is not better than half the teams in the Big East. Not even close.

Re: Just a possibility I hadn't really considered before

I don't think that comes into the equation at all. I think he brought in transfers because he knew he needed to win sometime in the next 3 years and he knew it wasn't going to be this year. If he hadn't brought in all those transfers, we'd be just as bad next year as we are this year.

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

Or we just want to be as good as possible in the present.

ISU fans are always talking about the future. We have "next year" fans. We need to get wins now rather than later. Experience should help that.

Re: Just a possibility I hadn't really considered before

Winning is the bottom line, quicker the better. I think getting kids in here for 4-5 yrs and keeping all of them are gone. Kids want to play, if not they are gone some place where they can. All kids on scholarship are not going to play at the same time and they don't want to sit on the bench. So I see no reason not to evaluate the transfers and Jr college kids and if they can help the team win then I trust CFH and company to make that call. Getting the best players possible should have nothing to do with what conference your in or think you may be in.

Why did he bring them in?
You notice how everyone is practically giddy about next year?
    That's why.

I thought with the new contract and penalty clauses drawn up between the ten Big 12 schools that it is not possible for anyone to leave the Big 12 for the next 10-20 years.

Hoiberg knows what he is doing, and he knows winning as soon as possible is the best thing for the program, short and long term.
