    Cursive Writing

There is a bit of an uproar going on about schools dropping cursive writing from their curriculum.

However, I don't see why...I think that it is an unnecessary skill, despite the evidence cited in this article.

Personally, I only use cursive when signing my name (and that's not even "textbook" cursive). I think each child should learn how to write their name in cursive, and that's it...no more time wasted practicing the entire alphabet.

Do you write in cursive at all anymore??

    Re: Cursive Writing

90% of the time I write in cursive. It's faster.

I'd be fine if cursive was replaced with a foreign language.

    Re: Cursive Writing

The argument is that cursive is time-consuming and not as useful as the keyboard skills students will need as they move on to junior high and high school, he says.
This is the thing. Schools are preparing kids for life after school, and cursive isn't used anymore. You actually don't even have to sign your name in cursive on a check anymore. I see juniors and seniors in high school that can't write in cursive, and still play the "find and peck" game with the keyboard. That's the bigger travesty in my opinion.

Also, I only use cursive to sign my name (and even then, it's only when required)

I never write in cursive. Even my signature is just a bunch of scribbles.

Cursive = huge waste of time

Typing skills = crucial skill that is needed by 90% of the population after school

    Re: Cursive Writing

My signature at one point derived from cursive, but at this point, it's not even that, it's more of just a scribble.

I've never used cursive outside of when I had to in school and I don't personally know anyone that does. Cursive is like the long division of writing. They say you need to know how to do it, but there's always an easier way.

    Re: Cursive Writing

I also have an issue with this experiment:
In other words, those who learn to write by hand learn better.
Mangen points to an experiment involving two groups of adults in which participants were taught a new, foreign alphabet. One group learned the characters by hand, the other learned only to recognize them on a screen and with a keyboard.
Getting rid of cursive is not saying that kids don't write by hand. What they are insinuating isn't true. At all.

    Re: Cursive Writing

On a side note, it's also a travesty that generally, kids only get 1-2 semesters of personal finance throughout school.

I have to agree with you here. I went to a private high school and got 0 semesters of personal finance (senior year got to choose between "business math" and calculus and chose the calculus).

    Re: Cursive Writing

I use it when I send out thank-yous and it takes me about three sentences to get my hand under control.

Your first mistake is sending out thank-yous...do you have your own stationary to write them on?

    Re: Cursive Writing

Believe it or not, I actually write letters. Oddly enough, the recipients seem to enjoy the personal touch of a handwritten letter.

    Especially the female ones.
