    Defense

Defense is the biggest problem. Somebody please reassure me that will be better next year.

I know we have limited options and everything, but help defense and rotations are just poor. It's like they don't know what to do. I hope it is just fatigue, but there are a lot of mental lapses we seem to experience.

I hope we can drastically improve that by next year. Next year is shaping up to be a crucial turning point for our program, nearly an NCAA Tournament or Bust type of scenario.

    Re: Defense

Don't necessarily agree it's NCAA or bust...but also think we'll be way more talented next year and win some of these close games and they won't be close games.I just don't see judging too critically the first year (or two even) considering what we have to work with for players, head coach experience, and what we've done (or failed to do) the last four years.

    Re: Defense

No big guys that can defend = easy points in the paint + second chances off of rebounds. Next year the addition of White and Booker to go with Railey and Godfrey should make a huge difference.

I think you're right. We also can't play a very aggressive style right now because we can't afford fouthe fouls that would come with it. More and bigger bodies will go a long way toward helping.

I undertand we're not going to be dominant on the inside, but the frustration for me is the open looks the other teams are getting on the outside. Our guys - especially Bubu, Diante, and Scotty - are quick enough to defend better than they have been. They seem to overcommit and get beat a lot.

Agree that defense is our Achilles heel. I think more talented bodies of the right size are the key. We just don't have the muscle this year.

Exactly. We wouldn't need to double down on the other team's post player.

The fact that Fred has put together any sort of team this year is highly amazing.

We all new it was a throw away year in waiting for the guys sitting on the bench. Heres to a better next year.

    Re: Defense

I can't think of one aspect of our defense that won't be greatly improved next year. Bigs will be better athletes and rebounders...guards, Babb & Allen have shown themselves to be great defenders already.

    Re: Defense

So far this season, the defense has been significantly better than our offense, for what it's worth.

    Category.............Offense..........Defense..........D-I Avg
    Adj. Efficiency:......103.1 (130).....93.1 (45).......101.2

If you think the defense is the issue, you're not considering that ISU is playing at one of the fastest paces in the country (which is far more of an issue than the defense, in my opinion).

    Re: Defense

I was a Greg McD supporter the whole time and even when he left but as this year has went on I think it has really become apparent what kind of shape he left this team in - when you have so few players there is not much you can do on offense and defense. Until CFH has a full compliment of players will we be able to see how he can coach without handcuffs.

Our defense on the perimeter is poor because they are so focused on help defense down low that they can't get out in time to defend the perimeter shot. If we didn't play that way we would be giving up layups by post players.

    Re: Defense

I think a main staple of our D during non con was to give teams long 2 pt jumpers and force them to make it. Teams in non con were not good enough to hit those shots consistently, but Big 12 teams are. Even Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

This all goes along with our lack of real post players.

    Re: Defense

Hoiberg mentioned we weren't switching properly (Ejim) and that cause a couple open threes. He said they practiced it during the week.

And next year we will be able to overcome bad defense...I hope anyway.

    Re: Defense

Yesterday's defensive game plan was a good one -- K-State is a great rebounding team, and it was a really bad matchup for the us so we doubled down and gave a lot of help inside. So that probably accounted for at least some of the open looks we were giving outside.

Who knew that Joey 9th-guy off the bench decided to turn into Larry Bird in the first half? How do you game plan against that?
