Twister Sister Summary - Free throws and turnovers cost sisters

This game was one of those that ISU should have been out of it early. Turnovers and poor guard play constantly gave OU chances to score. Fortunately Big C and Bolte were keeping us in the game as our post players struggled. Cole particularly had a horrible first half offering up numerous turnovers and refusing to shoot when open. Somehow ISU kept the game close and with two minutes left in the half actually closed to within 5 at 29-24 following a traditional three point play by Loz. Then the wheels came off. Sandwiched around two turnovers (Zimm and Loz), and Zimm getting blocked underneath, OU went on what would have been a very Sister-like scoring run by hitting three straight 3 pointers to extend the lead to 14 at the break. Very, very sloppy play by the sisters and incredibly poor defense at the end of the half.

Stat 1 of the half - Prins 2 points 2 fouls. Pop 0 points 3 boards. Zimm - no stats at all. Our inside game is hurting us here and our guard play is as bad as its been all year. This is in part due to the pressure OU is putting on us and the combination of Loz and Cole aren't handling it well. Loz has a much bigger girl guarding her and that long reach is bothering our small guard.

Bigger stat of the half - 15 turnovers in the first half. Ugh. That says it all.

You have to give our coaches credit. They know how to get the ladies going at the half and make adjustments. The second half was a game of surges and counter surges. Big C wasn't as effective early on and Bolte was still doing her thing. The help came from Jess as she started to score. It seemed that each time ISU would make a push, OU would answer back. It went to ten points, down to eight, down to six and suddenly we would have some turnovers and it would push back to ten again. Loz was having a particularly tough day of it handling the ball and the pressure. She had more turnovers than I've ever seen her have. I hope this isn't a recipe for other teams to use against us!!

For the kind of defense we play, OU and the sisters are hitting shots…both shot nearly 50% for the game. Unfortunately, the turnovers gave OU more shots than we got. And then something happened with about nine to go. ISU went on another run with a big three from Harris and a two from Bolt. This closed it to six again. OU started missing and our ladies were getting the boards. Big C scored her first of the second half and it was a THREE point game folks. The ladies were starting to click at a critical time of this one. Both teams missed some big shots and had turnovers. Prins badly missed a hook and turned the ball over on successive possessions. Fortunately OU didn't take much advantage although they did push it back to 5 at 7 minutes. Bolt answered right back to keep it at three. OU was struggling fortunately from 3 and kept flinging them up. Our ladies did a nice job of continuing to pull down rebounds. Another ISU turnover on a shot clock violation. Frustrating.

Even when we had a chance to close Jess missed the front end of a pair of free throws and it would stay at a 3 point lead. BUT OU kept missing. Bolt would hit again and it was a ONE point game. OU kept missing (see the theme?). Big C would make a pair of clutch free throws and all of a sudden the ladies had the lead for the FIRST TIME by one at 57-56.

Amazing stat - Pop picked up her first foul with four minutes left in the game!

OU seemed to be rattled. They were missing. They weren't rebounding. They were fouling. And ISU was taking advantage. Resilient is the word here folks. Just exactly what the play-by-play announcer said. Resilient. The ladies weren't going to make it easy though as they kept making a few mistakes when they opportunities to stretch that lead. How? Yes - turnovers. I will say they did take much better care of the ball in the second half as compared to the first.

Game stat - Bolt again hit for 20+ points. She has done so in all but one game in the Big 12 season. Will she ever get player of the week honors?

When will Cole learn to shoot critical free throws? Had a chance for a one-and-one and missed the front end. I've seen this way too often this year. Gave OU a chance for free throws on the other end and they would retake the lead. Free throws are critical folks (preaching to the choir here) and we have some weak spots here.

Another turnover and OU was back at the line again and "stretched" it to 2. ISU would answer back as Bolt BANKED in a three to take a one point lead with 1:15 left. Huge possession for ISU after a missed free throw by OU and Pop put in a two on a rebound for a THREE point lead!! Wow folks. This has been an amazing half.

Big stat - Pop was in double digits again for rebounds. What a freaking machine.

OU would get fouled after a 3 attempt (OU was 0-10 in the second) and would bring the score down to a 1 point game with 45. OU would be getting the ball back. Fennelly would call a time out at :38 to set things up. Needles and Pins, needles and pins. And what would happen? Wow…ISU turned the ball over…AGAIN.

We fouled and OU was at the line again and would take the lead by one. Last possession. Loz would miss a three and we would foul on the rebound. OU had a bad free throw shooter on the line and of course would hit the first shot. Can you believe it? A 40% free throw shooter and hits both. Where is that kind of luck when we have Cole on the line? OU went on a 6-0 run to end the game. We don't' even get a freaking shot off to end the game and lose by 3 65-62.

I'm sorry people…but this is a game that we let get away. Missed free throws and turnovers. That's all there is to it. OU hit their free throws and we didn't.

What a depressing ending to a really exciting game. We should have won, we had it in our grasp. This would have been our "signature" win over an RPI Top 10 team to go into NCAA selection day. Instead we will continue to be fighting to stay in the middle of the pack. Our remaining games against Texas and Texas Tech will essentially be a play-off for 4th place in the league.

Very depressing game. Coulda shoulda woulda.

Great comeback by the ladies today. It wasn't pretty right before the first half ended. They found a way to get back and just didn't have what it took to hold on. ISU has always been a team known for icing games with free throws. We have some girls that need to spend some extra time (like Harris does) in the gym practicing those. Great effort. Another big week coming up. Bring it on ladies!

Really depressing when both BB teams can finish in the same day.

8 seconds to go and they couldn't get a shot off? Something I would expect from our men's team right now, but to see it from our ladies? Come on now.

well, it wasn't as bad as that. Bolte was the decoy, she went to pass back to Anna who was wide open, and an OU player just tipped the pass enough that Anna couldn't get it and it went out of bounds. it was good defense on OU's part.

The last play wasn't the problem. The missed free throws and TOs were the problem.

Many have said OU is overrated. But, they are super fast in the guard court, which caused us too many problems in the first half.

    Anyone know why Z started?

The last play is a problem if you don't get the shot off. Bolte should have just shot it when she turned the corner and not tried to pass back. But, I understand what you're saying about all the plays leading up to it. They were just as big.

I think our speed makes people look faster. Our guards are not quick when handling the ball. That's one thing about this team that's different. We can't get fast-break points. Other teams always get back. There was a play late in the game where Loz just kind of drifted off to the side rather than try to tip the ball from Robinson as she went by. Like she was standing still. To me, it appeared Loz was really gassed in the second half. Maybe she's sick or dinged up, but if not we should be working on her shape.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - Free throws and turnovers cost sisters

I thought all our guards looked gassed in the second half, including Bolte. The announcers said and I agree OU has the best three guard combination in the country. They are fast, can score, and play defense like no other guards we have played against this year. Bolte scored 20 points but had to work hard for each and every shot. Hand was in her pocket almost every minute of the game. Loz and Chas were gassed half way through the first half and we didn't have anybody to bring in to spell them both for a minute or two. When you have a short weak bench that is what happens. Jess needs to get two or three minutes at the point in every half. If for nothing else to give all our guards a blow. This game and the Colorado game are two that we let get away and would have changed the season for us.

I wonder if we will look back at this season and think if only BF would have added two or three more walk-ons. A couple of bigger guards and maybe a post player at the end of the bench might be just enough not to see our team as gassed as they were Saturday. I really hope our short bench doesn't bite us in the butt at the end of the season and in the big Dance.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - Free throws and turnovers cost sisters

This doen't NOT resemble prior ISU teams at all. Where the heck is the 3 ball? We have been lured into a slugfest with the rest of the teams and while we do a fine job none the less, the 3 ball is a dagger. Yesterday any sort of three towards the end would have ended it...... period! But we look to get it in, where mugging was commonplace and then shoot while being mugged and wonder why it won't go in.

The out of bounds play Hamm with her left hand yanked on our kid to catch up thus turnover ISU. Bad call late. Our girls have to position themselves so we block their way and our shooter gets a good look outside.

ISU dribbles average, and we have slower than average quickness. I don't know about the three as I don't see them shoot it enough. We have a good enough team to 'Hang" with many..... but not good enough to step on their necks late!! IB

PS Also, everything we do motions right. OU overplays right and we head right into it. Try going left, you might surprize yourself.

And how many games have you been to over the years? This team has as much speed as past teams. And we go left as much if not more than to the right.

BF said in radio postgame that someone went right when they should have gone left, or vice versa. It was definitely going to Anna as the first option. He also said the previous two days of practice were not good, which may have been why Z started. We have a lot of inexperienced players who are learning why the details are important. Better to stumble now and learn than win now and peak too soon. It is a little frustrating for us long time fans that we are getting so many open looks for players who can't or won't shoot. If they are daring you to shoot, take it personally, and create a shot you can make!

Polar Bear...you hit the nail on the head. You MAKE yourself a shooting threat. I heard Bill F. say that he went in to the office the other day and Harris was in working on her shot. This is exactly what needs to take place. Cole should be in shooting three's and free throws non-stop. I asked a college bball player how much they worked on free throws as an example, during a single practice. He said every player shot at least 100 a practice before they could leave. Then if you are like some of the other sharp shooters ISU has had in the past you are back in during your free time shooting another 300 until it becomes natural.

Not saying I'm not disappointed, but if you had this penciled in as a win you were delusional. I was excited to see the ladies play so close on the road despite all the mistakes. Got to watch out for the OU slump at Kansas this week. That is a game we should run away with, can't afford a mishap there.

We are still on pace to finish 4th in the Big 12 which is important due to seeding. KState has had a cake walk of a schedule so far and are about to face some tougher challenges.
